The Orb did more for me in two hours than any rave ever did in eight. It was *that* good. The Orb are usually described as an ambient group but the label has always been misleading, as anyone who's ever heard Towers of Dub or Perpetual Dawn might attest to. Sunday night's performance, while it did have it's share of ambient spaceyness, gave the crowd a new alternative to the thump-thump-thump of house: the narcotic throb of DUB. Sunday night was all about dub: big throbbing basslines, reverb, echoes, swirling psychedelic samples. The crowd never quit dancing. From the opening mix of Bedouin to the closing refrains of Little Fluffy Clouds, the crowd never stopped moving, or stopped being moved if you will. I was super forunate and managed to sneak in my DAT and Shure SM11 Lavaliers. I clipped the mikes to my sunglasses and managed to get an excellent recording of the entire show. I thought the audience noise would distract from the performance but it actually enhances the recording. It's great hearing little snippets like "fuck yeah!" and "dood, those are some PHAT beats!" -- hehe.... -- wally@nicar.org "Is it not written in your law, 'I said, You are gods'?"
