At the Astralwerks site you can find " The sights of Lifeforms", a 1.45 MB quicktime movie from the Lifeforms Video. This .mov is also mirrored at this server. [mirrored with permission from Astralwerks.] Lifeforms was the first FSOL album I bought. Made aware of it by a magazine I decided to try it. Within one hour of listening I left the recordshop with Lifeforms. So that's what started all this... Also read the little page about Art of Noise. There are 2 CD-singles released from the Lifeforms Album. Cascade and Lifeforms Paths 1-7. Together good for over 70 minutes of MORE lifeforms. Definately worth to get, even if you already have the Lifeforms 2CD. |

Lifeforms
_Cascade_ starts with an almost heart-beat like bass and a collection of weird noises: a flute, bells, locusts(?) and some fast distorted synth sweeps. After that a voice comes in, surrounded by bells and a smooth soft bassline. _Ill Flower_ continues with some slightly distorted bassounds and a voice saying something you can't understand. The synthesizersounds take you along, into a nearly floating sensation. Untill you're shaken awake when _Flak_ begins. _Flak_ has more distinct bassbeat, and is a lot faster than Ill Flower. After the intro you slide back to where you were. Once in a while the bassline comes in and subsides again. _Bird_ Wings starts with windsamples and some echoing drums and little beeps. It makes me think of crawling insects.
The rainsamples announce _Dead Skin Cells_. A pianoloop and some various
synthsweeps are joined by a slow relaxed bass and hits. Again you can hear
the sound of insects in the distance and the high pitched sound of bubbles.
Congas continue till a slowdown, where the slow bass and pianoloop start
again. At the end a guitar comes in untill it fades into _Lifeforms_. _Lifeforms_ increases the tempo -again with congas. A long continuous bassline combined with a voice and drums make you take off after the floating around of the first tracks. Some sort of bell, sweeps and a few voices jump in to add more details to it. _Eggshells_ is like gasping after the sprint. The horn of a ship marks the beginning of again a very relaxed track. Little bells, long -nealy continuous- and very short synth sweeps lead you along a nice melody of some sort of drum/conga like sound. Drums come in as some sort of interlude, together with a very smooth bassmelody. When you hear a clock ticking a synthesizer jumps in together with a piano to announce the last track of Disc 1. _Among Myselves_ starts with the sample of water and a man saying "I can hear myself ... I think I'm a bit afraid" and a bass that sounds like someone breathing. "They were drowning me" plus some very distorted synth sweeps. Watch out because the last sweep is much louder than the rest. People who listen to this the first time will probably scare the hell outa themselves. After this extreme distorted sweep the track continues with some very nice sweet sounds (compared to that nasty one), joined by a smooth bassline and drums... Various samples and sounds guide you to the end. Time to put Disc 2 into the CD-player. back to the top.Disc 2 starts with _Domain_. The track starts with the sound of wind and an organ. The canon the organ plays is somehow familiar to me. It's a classical piece, but I couldn't recall what exactly. Purely by chance I ran into the original version. It is Canon in D major", by Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706). The sweet repeating melody continues, the sound of the wind slowly fades away and gets replaced by the sound of waves. You can hear some people talk, some sort of announcement (again in japanese ??). _Spineless Jelly_ continues with a slighty warning alarmlike sound together with a synthloop. You can hear "seven six" a few times on the background while different slightly distorted sweeps pass by. A piano marks the end of this track. Weird... _Interstat_ starts with a woman saying "the interstat" (Though it sounds more like "intelstat" to me.) and some weird beeps and sweeps. _Vertical Pig_ continues with a flute (panpipe ??), flowing water and what appears to be the distorted sound of a helicopter. After that the bass rumbles in. Way in the back you can hear some chorals. Though at first this track has something relaxed, after a while it somehow gets a bit restless and nerving... _Cerebral_ starts with another flute, and changes to guitar and piano. This track is a real cool-down after the weird tension of _Vertical Pig_. Some continuous sounds, voices and a bass-guitar make you flow towards _Life Form Ends_. _Life Form Ends_ has a very weird "wow wow" like bassline, plus the voices you could also hear in _Cerebral_. After the intro drum comes in together with congas and a modest bassdrum. At the end there's a completely different bassline and some weird hissing. The passing of an airplane marks the beginning of _Vit_. What followes is a large collection of different samples, some of them recognisable, some not. More airplanes, voices and animals. After this a somewhat industrial like bassdrum, it changes into a smooth bassbeat and drum with some howling sounds over it. _Omnipresence_ (IMHO: this is one of the best tracks on this doubleCD) starts with the sound of whips. The bubbling is the beginning of a very nice melody (synth sweeps) larded with different little sounds. The distorted bassline is a nice counterweight to the melody. Lateron joined by the sound of a piano and voices it creates a litteraly spine chilling effect. _Room 208_ starts with a mess of sounds, hard to make up what you hear. Slowly this becomes more clear, and you can hear bells and some singing ( something tribal ??). There's a nice bassmelody, in combination with the high melody. At the end the melody changes, some vague string-intrument. Plus a "BOOM BOOM" like bassdrum as heavy as lead, and as slow as a turtle. Some birdsounds (???) are the beginning of _Elaborate Burn_. This is -again- a vague and intriguing collection of sweeps and samples. _Little Brother_ starts with congas and continues with the soundchaos of _Elaborate Burn_. After that drums and a beat move in, accompanied by more hard-to-make-up-what-it-is sounds. A flute marks the end of this track and Disc 2... Time to let your conciousness emerge again. |
