Currently, Dr. Laurel is a member of the graduate faculty in the Media Design Program at the Art Center College of Design. She is also a consultant in research, writing, and design.

Her work focuses on interactive narrative, human-computer interaction and cultural aspects of technology. Her recent and current clients include: Cheskin Research,
Citibank, Oregon Public Broadcasting, Children's Television Workshop, Hewlett-Packard, Nielsen Norman Group and Kids Energy. Dr. Laurel is a member of Board of Advisors for the MIT Comparative Media Studies Program, Board of Advisors for Cheskin Research and Board of Governors for Communication Research Institute of Australia. Awards include the 1999 Girl Scouts of Santa Clara, CA, World of Today and Tomorrow, 1998 Girls, Inc. Award for Leading Women in Animation and the 1998 Top 25 Women on the Web Award from Webgrrls.

Computers as Theatre (1991), The Art of Human-Computer Interface Design (1990), editor, are published books written by Dr. Laurel and Severed Heads: Notes on Technology Art, and Nature is a collection of short stories and other published materials.

Education:

  • B.A. degree in Speech and Theatre from DePauw University in 1972

  • M.F.A. in Theatre from The Ohio State University in 1975

  • Ph.D. in Theatre from The Ohio State University in 1986.
