SacRaves FAQ

Please read this completely!

SacRaves is a mailing list for discussing the rave and underground club scene in the Sacramento Area. The "Sacramento Area" for our purposes includes the Central Valley from Stockton north to Oregon, and everything from the Bay Area to Reno.

During the four years since its birth in the summer of 1998, SacRaves' has become a VERY high traffic list. We will need to live by a few guide lines to help keep things managable.

* Appropriate topics include: - Announcements of upcoming events in the Sacramento area. - Announcements of upcoming events in the Bay Area, Fresno, Reno, Stockton, Modesto and southern Oregon. - Reviews of shows/raves/DJs/new music/etc. - Rave-culture - Local radio shows and stations that play electronic music. - Where to find the music, clothes, etc. - Rave picnics and other non-rave rave-related events. - Related cultural topics. - Rave-related stories on local TV stations or newspapers. - Personal introductions and socializing, to a degree. - Other goings on, to a degree. - making music, gear, etc. (although there are other lists more appropriate for this) - and almost anything else rave related or related to the local scene.

* Inappropriate topics/activities include: - sending files (WAVs, executables, etc.) or attachments to the list - solicitation of anything illegal (drugs, fake IDs, etc.)

* Personal attacks / flames are inappropriate for the list (as they are for most other lists). However, since day one SacRaves has been the most drama-ridden mailing list on the planet, to the point that people simply refer to it as SacDrama. While flames and attacks are not appropriate for the list, don't be surprised if you don't see some from time to time.

* Posting in HTML / richtext format is acceptable if your message size is less than 30k. Keep in mind that many SacRaves subscribers still cannot read HTML formatted emails.

Things are very loose, but try to stay focused - think of this list as consisting of people who are interested in raving in the Sacramento Area, but not necessarily as the only list these people are subscribed to. There are a plethora of other mailing lists and newsgroups out there - for example the "idm" and "ambient" mailing lists on hyperreal or alt.music.techno on USENET. There are also more than a dozen other regionalized mailing lists out there for different parts of the US and world. Other lists of interest to Sacramento area ravers might be Reno Raves, Stockton Raves, Modesto Raves, Davis Raves, SF Raves, F8, and the list goes on and on.

SUBSCRIPTION INFORMATION

This is how most of you got on this list: you sent a message to

sacraves-subscribe@hyperreal.org

Cool, perfect. Now, if you want off, simply send a message to

sacraves-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org

To send a message to the list, send it to

sacraves@hyperreal.org

There isn't a digest or calender only list yet. We'll let you know when there is one.

Are archives of SacRaves messages available?

Yes, going back to April of 2000. Sorry, we didn't keep archives before then. To view those archives visit:

http://www.hyperreal.org/raves/sac/arch/

What is the URL to the SacRaves home page?

http://www.hyperreal.org/raves/sac/

These pages are still under construction (aren't they always?) so be patient with us please.

Does SacRaves have a rave calendar?

Well, kinda =) We're working on a self-service automated calendar. That's still a few weeks off. In the meantime, the imitation calendar can be found at

http://www.hyperreal.org/raves/sac/calendar/calendar.html

Remember that it is information from YOU that keeps it current. Every time you get a flyer that you don't see in the calendar you should send in the info.

Calendar submissions should be sent to djpat@dj-pat.com (for the time being).

ETIQUETTE

There are a bunch of general etiquette guidelines I want to make sure you all have at least heard:

* The list can be very high volume. To keep it usable for as many people as possible, and so the machine running SacRaves (along with SFRaves, etc.) doesn't die from too much traffic, please try and keep your messages to the point and not overly chatty. If you are responding to a message, keep the amount of quoted text as low as possible. Try and keep your"signature" file reasonable, too.

* The list goes to many people, and is also archived for historical reason; never say anything which you would not want to be seen by someone far in the future, for example, details of personal drug consumption, either your own or someone else's. Though I doubt this is the case, you should assume that law enforcement reads this list on a regular basis. If you want an anonymous account, check out www.yahoo.com, www.hotmail.com, or another free web-based email service.

* SacRaves is *not* a paging service, nor is it a "chat line" for one-sentence messages. If you want to just "chat", check out an IRC room or something similar. SacRaves is also not a group therapy support line - but thoughtful posts about how you have been affected by rave culture are appropriate, because after all raving is a very personal experience.

* The occasional humorous post or not-entirely-rave-related topic is fine, but please prefix it with the letters "NRR" in the subject line, (as in, "Not-Rave-Related") so people who don't want to see that canfilter it out. I.e.

Subject: NRR: a joke...

This is without a doubt the number one rule for having a long term relationship with SacRaves. Subscribers who repeatedly violate this rule will be removed from the list.

* Promoting your party, your DJ gig, your new mixtape, etc. are all fine, but please prefix the subject line with the letters "BSP", as in"Blatant Self Promo":

Subject: BSP: underground party tonight!

* Offering things for sale are fine, so long as they are marginallyrave-related, such as musical instruments, sound systems, lightinggear, etc. This time, prefix it with the letters "4SALE", i.e.

Subject: 4SALE: SL1210 turntables.

* Normal etiquette is to wait around 2 weeks or more before you startposting anything; that ensures that you don't tread on old ground andthat you have a reasonably good idea of the mindset of the list.

* Posting virus alerts is usually not only unnecessary, but can be bogus and virus-like themselves. The same goes for chainletters.

* Don't forward someone else's private email to the list with out their consent.

It's all about the "R" in PLUR: RESPECT. The fact that email is free and instantaneous has given us a really great communication system here - let's not blow it by abusing it.

Please bear in mind that you are entering a virtual community; that the people here exhibit a friendliness and familiarity with eachother, and while criticism of posts is not discouraged, please treatother people's posts with the same respect you'd want yours treated.

SacRaves is not a moderated list - everything sent to it will get reflected out to the other list members. However, only people who are subscribed to the list (or the digest) may send a message to it - mostly in an effort to fight spam mail. Since people sometimes change email address (and sometimes it gets changed without their knowing), messages can get caught before being reflected and forwarded to me, the list-owner. I'll either forward them along, or let the person know why they didn't get forwarded. I will not pass along caught messages which violate the policies above.

[new for March 2002: SacRaves is temporarily now a moderated list. The drama that put the drama in "SacDrama" Just got out of hand. When things cool down a bit, the list will return once again to being unmoderated.]

The list-owner has the right to remove someone from the list who causes problems for others (or forgets to put NRR in their NRR messages!!!).

Other Resources

There is an incredible wealth of information related to raving, technomusic, and alternative chemistry at Hyperreal, accessible through the URL http://hyperreal.org There are also other mailing lists there.

Some mailing lists of particular intrest to those of us in then Sacramento area are SFRaves, Davis Raves, Reno Raves, Stockton Raves, Modesto Raves, Fresno Raves and So-Cal Raves. More info on these lists can be found on Hyperreal or in Sac Raves' links section.

In addition, check out the newsgroup "alt.raves" for non-Sacramento-specific discussion about raving.

Who is in charge?

Well, actualy nobody is "in charge" of SacRaves. SacRaves is a discussion group and a community of people that share common interests. Pat Ibbetson (djpat@dj-pat.com) is responsible for keeping the list in working order and moderating the list when it gets out of hand.

As far as the actual list goes, it is currently hosted by Hyperreal.

If you think there is a technical problem with the list, send a message to me at "djpat@dj-pat.com". He will respond asquickly as he can.

What is the History of SacRaves?

SacRaves was conceived by a group of ravers during the summer of 1998 and was fired up with the help of Hyperreal by Kathryn (sugark97@aol.com). During the the last four years the list has grown to include almost 500 subscribers, a far cry from that original handful of friends. Kathryn moved away and passed the torch on to Fatt Matt (mke_99@hotmail.com), who then passed the torch on to Becky Davis (aldeur@yahoo.com), who then passed the torch back to Fatt Matt (now matt@sone.ws) who then passed the torch on to me, Pat Ibbetson (djpat@dj-pat.com). During that time the community of people that is SacRaves has helped grow the electronic music scene in northern California tremendously. Spring of 1999 saw SacRavers band together and throw a party (StarBurst). Hopefully, someday, there will be another SacRaves party.

About This FAQ

Most of this document was either inspired by or blatently ripped off from the FAQs of the other California mailing lists: SF, So-Cal, San Diego and Fresno. Many thanx to all of them! I'll write an original one when time permits. Nobody knows where the original SacRaves FAQ that Kathryn wrote went, but this is pretty close to what the original looked like.
