He performed at Metro which is a club for alternative acts. He played the same set which he performed at FUTURE. I thought he was better at FUTURE. He played a song that was on the "Cool World" soundtrack, but told the audience not to see the film because it was awful. Seeing Moby perform in the Midwest brought back memories when I lived there. I crowd reminded me of the Midwest audiences I used to know. Half the crowd was really alive, and the other half was standing around shaking their head saying "What the hell is this shit." I overheard one girl say to one of friends "Is that him?" when he stepped up to perform. I seemed she was expecting him to front some type of band. It surprised her and the others there that all you need is one person. Found out about a couple things... On the weekend of the 15th, there's going to be some sort of underground-as-hell Storm Rave. you might want to try calling Groove Records in Brooklyn to see what's going on. Right now it seems to be invite only. **Don't** call and pester them if you don't have a clue what you're doing. I'm not saying this, just repeating what people have told me. Apparently there's been lots of problems and they're trying to get rid of the alcohol carrying/jocko types that always seem to show for "big parrrrttiiiiees" Also: September 19th is the date of the next storm rave. This Rave as well as the underground one on the weekend of the 15th will have two map points to avoid authorities and confuse undesirables. Frankie Bones is recovering from massive financial lossage from the previous failed Storm.. ---- Groove records refuses to announce map point locations for either even event until a couple days before them. ---- 48 HOUR RAVE! When either applying to or requesting to be dropped from a mailing list, it is best to send your request not to the list itself, but to the administration list, which is almost always called listname-request@listsite For instance, to subscribe, unsubscribe, or request any other administrative action from the moderators of the ne-raves list you shouldn't send your msg to: ne-raves@silver.lcs.mit.edu but rather to: ne-raves-request@silver.lcs.mit.edu Again, this is the standard way of doing things and I think you will find that most mailing list administrators do things this way. There are a couple good reasons for this. First, it keeps list traffic down so list members don't spend alot of time reading administrative msgs. Second, just because a list is sponsored from a particular site doesn't mean that the listadmin from that site is *reading* the list mail (while s/he *would* read all list-request msgs). Many sysadmins allow a variety of lists space on their machines - just because they're generous people. If you remember to try listname-request@listsite for your administrative requests, you'll probably make the list admin's life alot more easy. Having to rise early on sunday (like around 2:00 PM), I arrived just about as the rave was beginning. The lighting effects were very good, fog, light cones, what do they call the things on vertical metal trusses that shoot high intensity multi-colored light up into mirrors that scan rapidly accross the floor, and some less noticeable psychadelic lighting projected onto walls. However, at some point during the night, the lighting went off, and was reduced to two follow spots with colored gels. During this period, glow necklasses were distributed to almost everyone. For a while, the sea of bouncing glowstuff was an interesting enough effect in itself. However, the darkness continued, and continued, and at some point I was wondering if they had some grand electrical failure. About this time, I also realized I could talk with my friends on the dance floor...something I hadn't been able to do earlier, which I guess meant there was some speaker damage. In a way, I didn't mind the sound volume going down...it's nice to feel the beat to get you going, but later, as severe cochlear damage continues, I feel a little better if the music is down. This weekend I went up to Chicago to go to monsterave.I was quite excited. I went by wax trax and got KLF chill out and uf orb (I love 'em already), then picked up tickets. We heaed off to the rave around 1040, and when we got there things looked promising, but they had not yet opened the doors. When they did, there were still people putting up the intellibeams etc. There was a huge blown up godzilla. The system was not all that loud, and everyone just stood around. The lights were still on, and the movie screens were not doing anything terribly exciting. Then, the cops came. They wanted to get everyone out, for what reasons I do not know, but I heard from "illegal permit" to "well, they just don't like everyone walking around the neighborhood." There were no houses around there, only a huge stinky factory that was spraying a fine mist of some disgusting water-like substance....... Well, everyone left, with the underhand word being, come back later...we'll set it up again. Many flocked to White Castle, where they were again run out for "loitering." after a while, I went back, and in the interim, an impromptu tu band was playing on various drums. I met Todd Sines of Body (from ohio) and he was willing to get his stuff and have them play. He tried to talk to the organizers about it and they said, well, lets see what happens here first. More standing around, and then someone comes on the mic saying "It will be on.." but it looked like they were dismantling the equipment, which indeed they were....to top it off, someone got hurt, so they had to call 911, which meant...more cops! This time, everyone cleared out, with a feeling much more along the lines of get out of here as opposed to the earlier "these pesky flies should leave us alone." I gave up. I think everyone did. At least I got to get some new music, and meet Todd. The next time, I will be east coast raving. Final note: the cops were not city police, they were Blue Island (suburb) cops. Mix-wise I was completely unimpressed. The dj's just mixed. I watched them from the balcony and saw what they did. The music is sooo monotonous and repetitive that after I saw the dj mix records, I swore it was the same song (I am talking AFTER he took off the other record. No mix magic here). They didn't even throw in samples or anything. THE MUSIC SUCKED AND THE MIXING WAS SO SIMPLE MY GRANDMA COULD MIX AND SHES HALF DEAF!!!! As of this past weekend, the rave scene, as we knew it, died. The first sign of failing health occurred when FUTURE turned out to be a major disappointment, rather than a major rave. The disease quickly spread to Storm Rave when the Fire Marshall closed it down. Raves were still breathing but by now they were on a life support system. This past weekend's Catastrophic and Monster Raves pulled the plug on the rave scene. Law enforcement know about the raves, and make attempts to close them down. Promoters are ripping their customers off with expensive cover charges and little value. DJ's are trying to out dual one another to see who can play the hardest hardcore while forgetting about the ravers who are there to dance. This is today's rave scene. It's been a fun 18 months on the Warehouse party/Rave scene, but it's over now. It was exciting to go a rave in a deserted part of town when the music was Techno. Everybody was excited to be there, and they loved the music and were having fun. The rave scene this past 18 months was one of the best underground scenes I've ever experienced. I'll have lifelong memories of the scene. The scene as we know it is over, and it's time to move forward. I love Techno music, and I think it will continue to evolve. I'm hoping the rave scene will evolve too. I'd like to see smaller raves where the emphasis is on the music and the people, not the scene. One DJ will be adequate. The space does not have to huge, 20 - 100 people. A few lights. An art gallery, church basement would be adequate spaces. The original rave formula needs to be rediscovered: Good people + Good music = Good rave. - Rob [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] Date: Tue, 11 Aug 92 10:10 EDT From: laura@usl.com Subject: Re: Raves obituary >The summer of raves is over. As of this past weekend, the rave >scene, as we knew it, died. The rave is dead, long live the rave. Actually, "Quest" in Providence a few weeks ago was a majorly good rave. I think it's because it wasn't very big, just in someone's amazing warehouse/studio/loft type apartment. Fairly low-tech lighting, but it worked and was fun. >I'd like to see smaller >raves where the emphasis is on the music and the people, not the >scene. One DJ will be adequate. The space does not have to >huge, 20 - 100 people. A few lights. An art gallery, church >basement would be adequate spaces. With this sort of set up it suddenly becomes a lot easier to have "raves." I could have 40 people in my living room . . . that sort of thing. A while back there was some talk about micro-raves, maybe it's an idea whose time has come. But let's not complain, let's just start throwing the damn things. And I was just thinking that if it were kept really small it could even work in paranoid towns like Boston (no offense to the Boston crowd). A recent Frankie Bones-related flyer said something about "Going back underground" on it. I can see the rave culture splitting -- one side getting more and more aboveground while the other side gets smaller and more secretive. It's a shame we're driven to this by society/cops/etc but there you have it. I don't really *want* to keep it all a secret. Sure, there's a lot of idiots out there, but there's also a lot of great people who just aren't connected and might not ever be because of the necessary undergroundness of it all. Okay, so I'm rambling like crazy. I'd just hate to lose raving completely. We can't let it die. There's nothing inherently illegal about dancing at all hours of the night. All they need is a little competition, and be a little less money-oriented. >DJ's are trying to out >dual one another to see who can play the hardest hardcore while >forgetting about the ravers who are there to dance. Yikes. Here in SF the DJ's are marvelous, and they aren't interested in competing; Carlos plays more popular rave tunz as well as salsa house, Garth plays old house and mindbending acid, Jeno plays the newest, freshest, but not overhard techno, while Spun plays very percussive, almost tribal rhythms... >This is today's rave scene. And I'm reasonably sure that the "scene" will continue, in one form or another, in one size or another, for a *long* time. Trying to say that this will follow the rise and fall of other trends is difficult because it's so utterly unlike any other trend ever. Punk music changed the way music was made and experienced back in 1977. Acid house/techno has done the same thing. >The scene as we know it is over, and it's time to move forward. I'm >hoping the rave scene will evolve too. I'd like to see smaller >raves where the emphasis is on the music and the people, not the >scene. Yes! Absolutely. This is happening in LA. People just have to remember that these are really just big parties, and the goal is to have fun, not see how many people you can squeeze into a cavernous space with a 300 db sound system. I mean, I've had fun at raves with 5000 people, and I've had an equal amount of fun at a rave with 50 people. >One DJ will be adequate. Er, um, maybe 2 or 3. Besides, DJ's who really care about the scene won't require $1000 a night. $200 should be plenty, and some just starting out will work for a pack of cigarrettes. >The space does not have to >huge, 20 - 100 people. It's a 48 hour event but they only have one DJ & according to my R-mate, they said they are going to play tapes when he needs a break. I think they said there'll B 2 ambient rooms. The dance floor is 2000 sq. feet & is part of the performing arts stage. My friends & I went 2 the last rave in P-land, called PURE & this DJ's name was on the flyer. Someone here believes that he's the TECHNO DJ from the ZOOTS club. It doesn't sound like a major rave but who knows, I'm way up here in Canada & most of the info, I've gotten has been 2nd or 3rd hand. Besides, if the crowd is right, it don't matter how big it is. I wanted 2 go, but my friends want 2 stay here for a party and hold off for more of a sure thing. I can C their pt in a way - it is a 7 hr drive. Hope this helps. If ya can manage it, maybe you could let me know what it's like. Rave on! Mary-Kat. It is a discuission of the rave and music scenes in Britain, written in the usual humorous, understanding and still slightly-paternalistic tone of pretty much the rest of the writing in this magazine... [reprinted _without_ permission] The Economist 15-21 August 1992 p. 47 "The travellers' club" Britain's well-known love of liberty and tolerance of eccentricity have their limits. People with dirty hair who refuse to buy houses clearly overstep them. These "so-called travellers," said Lord Ferrers, the Home Office minister with responsibility for the police, "are a direct assault on the structure of social life in the country." After big festivals in Herefordshire, Powys and Hampshire, the government is planning to curb their freedom to cruise around the fringes of society by making it harder to collect unemployment benefit and, possibly, by tightening up the already stiff Public Order Act. Lord Ferrers has failed to notice the useful social functions that travellers perform. They offer ideal newspaper copy in the slow summer months. Their anarchistic vagrancy reignites in discontented mortgage-holders a belief that property is the basis of social order. And they give unheard-of ministers a chance to make silly statements. Every summer in the past 20 years, a couple of hundred free, open-air music festivals have take place somewhere in the countryside. If the festivals have grown in size, that s partly thanks to the behavious or some police forces. The 20,000-strong festival at Castlemorton in Herefordshire, for instance, was the result of Operation Nomad, conducted by the Wiltshire, Avon & Somerset and Gloucestershire police, all determined that no festival should take place on their beat. They swept up all the travellers they could find and shoved them over the border, leaving the unsuspecting West Mercia police to take care of the problem. The growing popularity of hippie-dom also swells the festivals. It is not so much that all the country's youth is taking to the road, but that new elements have been turning up at the festivals. These participants now divide into three groups. o NEW AGE TRAVELLERS,previously known as hippies. They have been around since the late 1960s. Some of them have been on the road all their adult lives; some have brought up children, now teenagers, on the road. Their beliefs tend to include some sort of mysticism, a distaste for cities and passive dislike of The System. Nobody really knows how many of them there are, but a figure of 10,000 is bandied about. According to Don Aitken, of the Travellers' Aid Trust, new recruits are either middle-class, educated types who have come to view that this is the best way of life, or working-class kids whose lives in the city offer less freedom than does vagrant poverty on the road. o THE BREW CREW, named after their favourite drink, Carlsberg Special Brew. They wear singlets, boots reminiscent of the skinheads' Doc Martens and facial expressions derived directly from the punks. Their trade-mark is a small black dog on a string. They are largely urban types, who take to the road for bits of the summer. THeir active nastiness has been a bit of a problem for other travellers: the hippies' determined tolerance has forced them to put up with vanloads of drunk anarchists who join their camps and fail to bury their excrement. But they are few and, the hippies say, becoming fewer. o RAVERS: the tens of thousands of bored children of all classes who used to go to acid-house parties before those were shut down by the police and new legislation. They have turned en masse to the hippies' festivals. In one way, the hippies have benefited from the ravers' invasion. They make a bit of money by selling the tourists vegan curries, nutburgers and bottled water to quench drug-induced thirst. In another way, they are horrified. Having dropped out of urban life to find peace in the countryside, they now find that thousands of city kids are roaring down the motorways to join them. With the kids have come vast mobile sound systems run by outfits called things like Spiral Tribe, Rough Crew and Circus Warp. Their rave music drowns out the hippies' unamplified bongo drums and tambourines. Hippies also tend to disapprove of the drugs ravers bring with them: cannabis, of course, is fine, but city kids take Ectasy, or a mixture of acid and speed, which loosens the bowels. Hippies tend to carry shovels with them; ravers do not. On the subject of ravers and the Brew Crew, hippies can sound remarkably blimpish. Of their music Mr Aitken says, "they seem to regard it as their job to keep a very loud noise going." If tighter laws are introduced, the hippies may suffer as a consequence of the ravers' invasion. It is hard enough already to live on the road and not break the law. A traveller cannot simply rent a weed-covered, set-aside field from a farmer for a couple of weeks: the farmer will be charged with running an unlicensed caravan site. Nor can a farmer rent travellers a field without getting a license; and councils tend to demand prohibitive prices for licenses in order to drive the festivals into somebody else's backyard. Trying to stop these things happening is pointless as well as illiberal. They will go on, as their persistence over the years has shown; and trying to suppress them means more expensive forms of conflict between the police and already discontented kids. Some sensible policemen are already thinking about other ways of dealing with the business. Leading a delegation to see Lord Ferrers, Ron Hadfield, chief constable of the West Midlands and head of the top police officers' public-order committee, broached the possibility of setting up permanent sites for the festivals. -Andrei -- Andrei Cogan (coganman@ocf.berkeley.edu) ||| "When in doubt, panic." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hofstadter's Law: It always takes longer than you think it will take, even if you take into account Hofstadter's Law. [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] Date: Thu, 20 Aug 92 11:58 EDT From: laura@usl.com Subject: UPI rave article lifted from the net UPI NewsFeature SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -- Twenty-five years after the acid-laced Summer of Love, a new counterculture generation is coming of age in San Francisco. In 1992, the ``cyborganic bee-inn'' has replaced the ``Human Be-In'' of a quarter century ago; the ``Psychotropic Carnival'' has replaced the 1960s Acid Test in drawing thousands of young San Franciscans out for an all-night celebration. Known as raves, high-tech dance parties orchestrated by celebrated DJs mixing loud techno music with computer generated video and laser light shows from dusk to dawn and beyond, these marathon festivals have become a popular and profitable counterculture industry. At their best, raves are viewed as a strong underground movement that is creating and nurturing a sense of community and equality among a new generation. At their worst, the parties are regarded as the product of manipulative and greedy promoters who host the events with nothing more than profit in mind. In either case, raves continue to expand and grow. On any given weekend, thousands of ravers decked out in ``Cat in the Hat'' hats, psychedelic jumpsuits and a kaleidoscope of dress pay anywhere from $15 to $30 to attend a rave in some empty warehouse or vast field an hour or two from the city. Many participants will also lay down another $20 for a hit of the designer drug Ecstacy to fuel their all-night dancing beneath the laser lights and video snippets parading across screens around the dance floor. Timothy Leary, the former Harvard professor who popularized the use of LSD three decades ago and has appeared at several raves hosted by his son in Los Angeles, says raves have much in common with the Acid Tests of the 1960s where hippies experimented with the drug in an attempt to produce personal and spiritual freedoms. ``(Raves) are very much like high-tech Acid Tests,'' Leary said. ``The difference is that the kids are a thousand times more sophisticated and worldly now than hippies were back then.'' But musician Genesis, a member of the band Psychic-TV that appeared at a ``cyborganic bee-inn'' this month, views raves as more of a consumer-oriented venture than the Acid Tests. ``It doesn't touch as many bases in the senses as it could,'' Genesis said. ``In this age, people are expecting a fast return on their investment.'' Rave promoters can walk away with tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of dollars a night by charging the average $20 door charge while also selling so-called ``smart drinks,'' amino-acid laced beverages that energize dancers and sell for $3 to $5 each. A New Year's Eve rave produced by a group known as ToonTown was reported to have taken in $175,000 at the door. ``My understanding is that these (raves) have no spiritual, philosophical or religious connection,'' said Lt. Mike Ferguson of the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department, which recently arrested the host of an outdoor rave for allegedly creating a nuisance in Santa Rosa after 70 neighbors near the party complained about the noise. ``It's simply for money, and a large amount of money.'' Other rave critics are worried about the liberal use of the drug Ecstacy by party-goers. Ecstacy, or MDMA, was used in the early 1900s as an appetite suppressant but has now become a popular drug among young adults. A pamphlet distributed at some raves says the illegal drug can ``provoke an intense, energenic, spiritual high or lead to warm loving relaxation .... Sensual yet not necessarily sexual, beautiful and sometimes dangerous, Ecstacy covers a wide range of human emotions.'' It is the dangerous aspect of the drug that worries some doctors. In a recent issue of the British science journal Lancet, researchers reported that Ecstacy had caused at least seven deaths in England. The article attributed several of the deaths to hyperthermia caused by individuals dancing at all-night parties such as raves while on the drug. Darryl Inaba, director of the Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic Drug Detox Program, said Ecstacy works as a basic amphetamine that can cause depression and other negative side effects. ``We're worried about any new drug, especially one that's promoted as being safe and non-toxic,'' Inaba said. ``Most people in the drug scene (of the 1960s) learned that drugs were a misguided spiritual search.'' Rave promoters say critics have misjudged the parties. Promoter Mark Metz said that while drugs play a role in raves, they are not essential. ``There has always been a catalyst in new scenes,'' Metz said. ``But that doesn't mean you need drugs. Most people like to go to raves unadultered.'' ToonTown, which recently incorporated to become Virtual Realty Inc., released a two paragraph statement before their latest event, the ``Psychotropic Carnival,'' describing their intentions. ``The purpose of ToonTown is to bring people together to dance in an atmosphere of peace and safety,'' the leaflet read. ``We believe music can create harmony where there is discord and create unity and common purpose where there is conflict.'' The leaflet went on to discuss the drug issue by stating ``intoxication caused by alcohol or drugs can be personally dangerous and spoils the fun for everyone else. We ask that you ... respect yourself and those around you.'' Raves are generally traced back to England in the late 1980s, where a disenchanted group organized late night, Ecstacy-fueled parties where pounding, vocal-less techno house music revved up to 150 beats a minute blasted from speakers. The raves grew in size and popularity and British authorities eventually started to clamp down on the parties. The restrictions prompted some English rave promoters to move to the United States to promote their ideas. Large rave scenes have popped up not only in San Francisco, but also Los Angeles, New York and other urban centers. The scene has also gained a following in parts of India, Indonesia, Belgium, New Zealand -- and a promoter is working to popularize the scene in Sweden. Metz says the events have a message to convey. ``The message behind the music is a positive one,'' Metz said. ``(A rave) unifies people and makes people realize we are all equal.'' Metz is also co-owner of Ameba, a clothing store on Haight Street that caters to ravers with a unique array of kaleidoscopic clothing that can cost as much as $70 for a dress and $25 for a shirt. Following on the success of Ameba, three new stores catering to ravers have opened in the Haight in the past four months. At the intersection of Haight and Ashbury, where the Psychedelic Shop opened in 1966 to promote the positive uses of LSD, now stands Behind the Post Office, a closet-sized store where ravers squeeze in to pick up invitations for the next raves or purchase a new hat or shirt. A few blocks away sits HouseWares, a ``rave gear'' store that opened July 4 with stylized hats, clothing, pendants and tapes of the area's favorite rave DJ's music. ``I wanted to have a business of my own, but I'm not in it for the money,'' said Perry Weisberg, co-owner of HouseWares. ``There is a rave fashion, but there's a whole peaceful, positive movement for change behind it. ``Or, it can be a movement for change if greedy people don't take it over,'' he said. Okay, so I'm back and I'm trying to recover from sputnik! amazing rave.. It was held in Newburgh, NY (way north?) inside of a skate park, and I have no idea how long the rave lasted, but it went untill at least 9 or 10 because around 9AM when we all started to leave we could still hear some amazing techno coming from the outside DJ's... inside the skate park people were selling baloons of NO2 (at the same place as the smart bar and food, a sort of dumb bar, no? :) ) The music was excellent , with the usual 3am interruption of NY's lousy hardcore band distengrator... 3 guys who basically stand around and hold down keys so that their sample loops run correctly... It would really be something to see a techno band with stage presence... Since I saw distengrator at one of the first Storm Raves in brooklyn, I've left the building just about everytime they come on. (which is what I did this time as well) Outside there was a Dj and a small sound system playing anything from deep house to ambient chill music (Really appreciated in the early AM hours when my ears and mind were suffering!) Frankie Bones made a suprise apperance around 5 am and played an incredible set of deep house, melodic techno, and acid house.. When he took the stage it completely woke me up; I was nearly falling asleep from the droning of Adam X's hardcore... I don't know why, hardcore early in the evening is nice, but give me 4 straight hours of it and I'll fall asleep... thumpthumpthumpZZZZ.. I'm off to catch a shower and recover from this monster. Someone post some opinions along with this. There's no opinion-generating matter left in my mind to do it. I had an amazing time. There weren't any assholes here, and noone was tossing attitude. Well, we arrived there around 10:00, and there wasn't much going on, so we coffeed out for a bit at the Zig Zag, and decided to hit the Vault at 911 F. St. But the Vault was 21 and over, so since half our crew was not, we went back to Shock. By now, the Shock was happenning, but we noticed, gee, there were certainly alot of _guys_ there. And they seemed to all be with one another. Where did Laura hear about Shock Rave? Oh, in the _Blade_, a D.C. gay newspaper. Aha! Well, it was interesting being the minority sexual orientation. The music was alot less hardcore techno than your standard Rave, and for a short period the BPS dropped into the typical dance music range. Yuck! But then it got faster, and we still managed to have an OK time. Lighting was nothing amazing, a stack of TV's, four intellibeams, a strobe or two brought in at apropos times. No fog. And for a Rave, there was alot of people picking up one another going on. -Thomas resident technoshaman [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] Date: Mon, 24 Aug 92 09:39 EDT From: laura@usl.com Subject: Re: Sputnik! (another point of view) Okay, Sputnik was held in Newburgh, NY, about 75 miles north of downtown Manhatten. A very good place for a rave, it turned out. Plenty of parking, plenty of space, plenty of people. There was only one thing there that there wasn't plenty of . . . but I won't go into that here. We arrived about 10.45 ish, me being totally freaked from the great expanse of Catskills forest we had to drive through to get there ("where the hell are we? where the *hell* is the next exit?"). Upon arrival in the sleepy kind of hicky town of Newburgh we noticed "Sputnik" signs pointing the way. After turning down a side street we were greeted by very large men in Sputnik T-shirts who asked us if we were going to the rave and then directed us to the parking area. The skate park was a good place to have a rave. There was tons of dancing room on the rink floor, large amounts of blank wall space upon which large and colorful computer graphics were projected, and a group of people with boards and blades going at it in a bowl or whatever you call it (I don't know any skate-punk parlance). People were selling T-shirts, bags, and hats, and there were piles and plies of rave and club flyers everywhere. Out back a second set of DJs played danceable chill music while people talked and cooled out in the mountain air. Having the rave so far from New York City really made a difference. At the last (aborted) Storm Rave the place was crammed full of really obnoxious types carrying cases of beer and getting rude while standing in line. There was basically none of that at Sputnik. Security was very much in evidence the whole time, but was completely unobtrusive. My only complaint with the whole thing is (shudder) I'm starting to get really annoyed with hardcore techno. It droned on and on and on in a mesmerizing energy-sapping way. After a while I just can't dance to it any more because there is no variety. When DJ's like Dante, Keoki, and Frankie Bones were playing it was a lot more interesting and energetic. But at one point around 4.00 am the floor was practically empty while Adam X attempted to blow out everyone's eardrums with the hardest of the hard. I ask "why?" Really hard hardcore approaches industrial, and starts producing those same kind of angsty/angry feelings. As it goes on it just sort of numbs me. Another kind of weird thing was that the lighting was a lot better for some DJs than for others. It looked to me like Adam X brought his own intellabeams, for example, because the only time I saw intellabeams was during his and Frankie Bones' sets. What's the deal here? DJ-ego problems? It would have been cool to have had the beams for longer. The guys selling nitrous were totally insane. When I first saw them around 11.00 they were sucking away at balloons as fast as they were serving them up to everyone else. And when I walked out of the rave at 7.00 the next morning (because I was tired and starving) they were *still* at it. The same guys. What whipped-cream heads! They were just too funny. After breakfast of oreos, gatorade, and peanut butter cups we curled up in the back of my car for a nap before starting the drive home. We woke up about 8.00 only to hear the most incredibly wonderful techno coming from the chill area. Not being ones to resist the beat (but also being denied re-admission) we danced in the parking lot for a while. Feeling totally re-energized and awake, I figured I'd better get moving home or I'd never make the drive. And the rave was still going strong . . . . If Sputnik launches again GO GO GO. You *will not* be sorry. And while milling around outside after the after-hours was broken up by Boston's finest, a few of us tried to organize a continuation of the rave over at this English guy Simon's place. I don't think too many people took us seriously... Jim (Jughead), Debbie and myself went back to my place and got Jim's mixer and vinyl and then headed over to Simon's loft on Newcomb St. His loft was about half the size of the last Quest location. Anyway... It ended up being Jim, Debbie, myself, Simon and Holly raving to Jim's turntable terror on a couple of 1200's through a humble, but powerful enough, 160 watt system. The after-hours party on sunday was a HUGE success... but here's something to think about... It was held in someone's apartment. Someone allowed it to happen, because there was a _profit_ to be made... $5/a person... part way through the night we see "lord" [sic] Debo give a great wad of cash to a couple people (We're taking choke-a-horse wad of cash). Why couldn't this be FREE? I've been to parties at 22 Thayer St before. People never charge. Most of the time when they do charge it's to cover the alcohol. There wasn't any (there shouldn't be alcohol at a rave). But, when we bring the "rave" scene into things, everyone wants to be a promoter; everyone wants to make a profit. Looks like Debo profited again. What happened to our money; what was it used for? Debo owns turntables. There wasn't any special lighting, There wasn't anything but people dancing and having fun. I've had tons and tons of people over my previous apartment, oodles of times nicer than theirs, and a gigantic roofdeck and parties till 9am. We didn't charge anyone anything. we had lasers, and a huge sound system. still we didn't charge. I guess I'm asking for people like Debo to forget the green and help the scene. Asking for cash is _fine_ if it's paying for necessities, but it's wrong if people are just having after hours and such just to make a profit. --John [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] Date: Wed, 9 Sep 92 11:04 EDT From: laura@usl.com Subject: The Rave-O-Matic Index (rev wed sept 9 [SHORT]) T H E R A V E - O - M A T I C I N D E X The short form.
