(At Storm Rave ============================================================== Concerning the drinking age in New York & Storm Rave My problem: a bunch of Canadians from a little town in a little province here in Canada are planning to go and we're not sure about being able to get in. Can anyone tell me what is the legal drinking age in New York? Also what kind of ID must a person have in order to get in to the Storm Rave next weekend. I mean who in New York would have ever heard of Fredericton, New Brunswick. Our drivers licences don't have picture ids. Several of the people I'm going with are 20 - will this be any problem (like if they try to get fake ids from someone). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Personally I'm 30 and u wouldn't think I'd have any trouble (I certainly don't look underage) but when we went to the PURE rave in Portland, they hassled me cause I didn't have picture ID!!!! They picked the most unlikely one in the crowd to bug - go figure! Of course I think it distracted the bouncer from bothering anyone else so maybe it was a good thing. I mean should I get a passport? (Seems kind of extreme to me plus it's $35.00 Cdn and takes 5 days to get so I may not even have time to get one.) Like I said, any help would be very much appreciated ... We arrived at the line about 1am, it wasn't hard to find you could see the searchlight miles away!. After about an hour of waiting we finally got in. The arrangement - A fenced off section of the beach, with a stage for the DJ, lights etc the back end of a hotel containing a pool, several bars a smaller dance floor. The dance floor (beach) was packed when we arrived, with a couple of hundred wildly gyrating people. I think the crowd number peaked at around 1500 at about 3-4am People in Florida are a strange bunch (its the heat) and Miami Beach is the magnet for them. I would say that about 1/4 of the people were hard core ravers (as you'd find in the UK or SF) about 1/2 were people like me - trying something new and enjoying it immensely and the rest were the miami type- lots of gold/sunglasses/flash cars/high heels etc and looking like they were having a miserable time, but having paid they'd at least get their moneys worth :) As far as the law was concerned, the cops had the place well cordoned off and were even patrolling inside the fence! I dont think they quite knew what was happening, but the atmosphere was so friendly, that they had nothing to do. The paramedics had to cart off one girl who freaked out, whether this was chemically induced or not, I dont know. This is the first time I've spent an evening clubbing in Miami and felt safe (I live about an hour away). The whole gang crap is rife down there and invades everything, but at Raindance, I was happily chatting with every crosssection of the population ("the gathering of the tribes") Even though it was heavily publicised, (ticket master, TV, Radio etc) I think it was the right thing to do, its shown the cops, and the city that these things are ok and they'll probably look a lot more favourably on any future events, and there seems to be a lot of them coming up. I'll let you all know how things work out Graeme PS I can't really describe the music cos I'm not really sure what I'm listening or dancing too! all I can say was that it was a lot faster than the raves I've been to in SF, I've been told it was very techno, and that I prefer acid house - but hey what do I know! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ====== ======= //===== graeme@transquest.oe.fau.edu (Graeme Rae) // // // // // (407) 367-3804 //====// //====// //=== Dept of Ocean Eng. Its called Planet Rave and is being put on by the Chemistry people. Anyone who likes hard core should be at this one. They've got a massive sound system(can't remember the watts) usual trippy visuals, etc. The great thing about this is that it has no chance of being busted. They actually went out and got a licence to put this on. They recomend that you purchase tickets in advance but there will be sold at the door. For more info call 416-351-0911. After about an hour of waiting > we finally got in. The arrangement - > A fenced off section of the beach, with a stage for the DJ, lights etc > the back end of a hotel containing a pool, several bars One thing I think worth mentioning: It was in the middle of the Art Deco District. Walking the several blocks from where we parked to the site, I facied myself shrunken and dropped into a model--a strange effect of this particular architecture scheme. (I had never walked this part of M.B. before...) The pastel colors lended an unreal tint on the place. > PS I can't really describe the music cos I'm not really sure what I'm > listening or dancing too! all I can say was that it was a lot faster > than the raves I've been to in SF, I've been told it was very techno, > and that I prefer acid house - but hey what do I know! Well, WE ARE IN NEED OF SOME SERIOUS DJ TALENT HERE!!!! (Any good techno DJ's looking for a little vacation, check this place out. I'll get you in touch with some promoters...) Most of these guys sucked. The music on the main dance"floor" was mostly hardcore but the only DJ I knew of who seemed to get things right was DJ Chang--he also played the best music. The rest of the DJs were going straight from one hard beat to the piano break of the next song and would prematurely leave the crowd without a beat for inordinate amounts of time. Ideally, witholding the beat should make the crowd go into a frenzy when it returns, but this only works when the mixing and music has really been intense up to that point. With the constant screwups, they it just made the crowd stand around sorta ho-hum-get-on-with-it. Blaaaaa...... Chang did a fair job though (esp with that Apotheosis tune..;). The dancefloor back on the patio had a live bongo player who played along with a slower funkier beat which allowed those latin girls to dance that sexy sorta dance they do. It was quite relaxing to sorta glide to this beat after killing my calves attempting to dance 140 BPM on sand! Sand is uncool; it tends to wear you out much quicker. This DJ on the back patio was pretty bad too ... basketball type transitions from one song to the next but the music was good and I really didn't care too much at this point. In spite of my complaints, I had a really great time! It was a lot of fun and I was so hard up for dancing, the bad DJing didn't bother me too much. I'm looking out for the next one. (but where do they get off charging $12???, oh well :-) ___________________________________________________________ (_____ | (______ Internet: steve@cse.fau.edu ___________)___|__________) Bitnet: S_SMITH@FAUVAX [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] Date: Tue, 14 Jul 92 17:00:41 -0400 From: jna@silver.lcs.mit.edu (oatmeal and acid) Subject: Re: sf-raves sfraves-request@soda.berkeley.edu to sign up -John [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] Date: Tue, 14 Jul 1992 17:52:00 -0400 From: alrashid@pyrite.SOM.CWRU.Edu I am a fan of Hardcore Techno CD compilations. I hear of and listen to most of my favorite stuff by making radio tapes of a WZBC show. The stuff I hear on that show isn't stuff I'll hear at ANY club or, with rare exception, on any compilation. Most of the comps out today are very mainstream'y, housy sounding(as you probably already know) and the best you might find would be a compilation like the Hardbeat #4 compilation that includes some goodies like Rave Crusader, and Oliver Adams. Most of the other Hardbeat series (on Compleat Kaos thru Caroline domestically) have some pretty good "hardcore". Another you might look for would be Techno Energy or the 1000 Ohm compilation. Sorry I don't have any catalog #'s for you. Let me just say that nothing you find on ANY comps (so far that I've seen) comes close to the intense minimalistic, experimental, lacerating acid that you can find on the loads of inde label stuff coming out of Europe right now (ie. Germany, Rotterdam, Holland) (I'm spoiled now ;)). This is the stuff I hear ONLY on the radio show I listen to (unfortunately), and it's mostly if not all on vinyl direct from these tiny labels themselves. But you might have some luck (if you can do vinyl) checking Boston Beat on 80 Bennington Street in East Boston, MA and there are a couple of other GOOD dance music stores in East Boston too. OK... now I'm just babling. But I'll have to give 'em a chance. I can only comment on two of these, but let me just give y'all a second opinion on the following suggestions: > instinct dance [basically a moby compilation] This Moby comp, IMHO, has got 3-4 good tracks on it. Surprisingly enough, the version of "Go" ain't one of 'em (it's the basic Twin Peaks backed ambient mix. Not bad, but not hardcore). Two of the three Voodoo Child tracks and 'Drop a Beat' by Brainstorm are good, but overall I'd give the disc a 5/10. It is worth the money if you can get it for under $10. The tracks that ARE good are serious slammin' hardcore! *) The rest of the disc is pretty ambient and not real exciting. Oh yah, cat # EX-236CD. > kaos theory (vols 1-3) [warning: edited versions] I have kaos theory 1 (Telstar: TCD 2562 - $20) and it's one of the worst supposidly hardcore techno discs I own. Of the 16 tracks there are few memorable ones; 'G-Force' by Prodigy, 'There is no Law' by Messiah (best track). The rest of the disc covers a pretty broad spectrum of techno from some REAL housy stuff (which I can't stand) to some funky techno. For serious hardcore I'd have to give the disc a 3/10. If you don't mind your hardcore FILLED with housy breaks and soul'y overtones, you might like it. I just posted this on Rec.music.Industrial, and thought you also would be interested. (probably more so) So enjoy... Along with posting the track listing of the new 'O Fortuna' CD, I thought I'd take the oportunity to review a couple of techno discs I recently purchased. I'm sitting here at work with ALOT to do, so these reviews will be quick, kinda mathematical in nature with just # ratings on a few catagories. It's sort of a new kinda review; minimal comments. Let me know what you think and I hope it's interesting! Just to let you know where I'm at as far as taste so you'll have something to gage this review on. I like my techno minimalistic, experimental, hard edged, throbbing (ie. Underground Resistance, Praga Khan, Moby) and devoid of housy overtones. ;) Of course, opinions on the format are welcome. I want to know if this is interesting or helpful. Opinions about my OPINIONS are pretty futile. It's just a simple review. Enjoy. Hey, whayda minute! This looks like Pete Ashdown's XDZebra format! YOu're right! Very similar format. It's a good format to use! It was fun I must say. As it said, it was held in an unused safeway warehouse. The first floor was rather big. This is where the harder music was played. They had 3 spinning lights, the swirling oil being projected on a wall with overhead projections occasionally being projected over the oil visuals, and some other colored light machines. There were 4 speakers monoliths towards the middle of the room and most people danced inside this area. Downstairs was a smaller less intense room. I just passed through there as I enjoyed the music upstairs a lot more. The crowd was also pretty cool... All in all, it was really fun. Review. ------------------------------------- We arrived at groove records around 11:30pm, happily buying tickets, snagging directions off of a scrap of paper taped to the window and started our drive up the beltway towards Lower Manhattan, site of Storm Rave 6. We saw 1 or two paddywaggons outside the place, and noticed that the entire city district we were in stunk vaguely of shit and fish. Nice way to start what was to be a happy evening.. Once we got there, we weren't expecting what we saw at all: probably about 5000 people, waiting outside in a enraged, unhappy, angry mob. Most of the brooklyn B-Boys were chanting things like "Let us In! Let us In now, motherfuckers!", whilst Storm Rave Security people just kept screaming "line up against the wall or NOONE gets in.." They put up a barricade, pulled 95% of the line back around the corner of building, as even still MORE police showed up. About 3:30AM, the line started to move (no, make that: mob started to run towards the entrance), and we thought there was hope of us getting in. About ten inner-city kids beat upon the door, still screaming. Later I find that someone started a fight with SR security, and the barricade was knocked down. Police then went bonkers, shutting down the rave, and at any given time, I saw 25+ policemen. Word spread quickly throughout the crowd that Frankie Bones, Adam X, and Jimmy Crash were bringing a sound system underneath the belt pkwy bridge for a sort of "after-rave" party.. They never showed. I have to give credit to frankie bones, who finally showed up at the beach in the morning and apologized for everything. Apparently he's got "multi-thousand dollar fines", 4 summons, and serious violations of fire code laws that he's got to go to court over. (ouch!) He is also working on the StayFree rave, and is going to allow us to (hopefully) use tickets from StormRave to get into Stayfree... In line I had run into laura@usl.com (hi laura! :) ) , and we managed to lead 6 cars full of incredibly _fucked up_ people back to the beach... Too bad that Highway Patrol , and even more Metro Cops kicked us off of the beach around 4 AM. Most of the ravers did _not_ leave the beach, but thanks to the cops, it eliminated most of the jockos and beach kids. Got to see a beautiful sunrise in the morning , and saw an amazing game of volleyball, played by loads of tripping ravers, while a tape of Jacquelne Christine (one of the DJ's from Detroit who never got to spin because the rave was closed down) played off of a boom box... It was too funny to watch people dance and play volleyball at the same time, while still recovering from the night before.. On the beach, I ran into DJ Onionz and a few Boston ravers who went to his small rave. Only 300 or so people showed for it, and I heard it was wonderful; mostly hardcore raver types and no jocks. Probably would have been alot better than fighting in line for Storm, but hey, we had fun on the beach anyhow! What I really wanted to say is something along the lines that the drug part is not *required*, which to me is what makes raving so wonderful. I mean, you can go to lots of college parties where everyone is drinking like fish because that's what you *do* at those parties, and the whole thing gets rather stupid and peer-pressurey etc. But at a rave, even if 90% of the people are totally tripped out, I haven't felt any pressure to do the same. It's like the perfect party atmosphere: all kinds of possibilities for illicit behavior, and total choice and free will about what you do with it all. So beautiful. So free. I did not think the lights were that great. If you want to go to a good rave with some terrific lights, go to the Catastrophic Raves. I like to go to raves sober. Good lights will make your head spin. You would need some mind alter substance for SR, 'cause the lights won't do it. I try to avoid alcohol at raves at I've never visited. It was a good thing. Storm Rave at 4 JobTimeJohns. We made it to the meat packing district and waited in line for about 40 mins. I walked up a dark ramp with several white laser lights shooting at me. I liked this effect. I got to the top. Half of the people were standing around while the other half were dancing. There was a graffiti painted car in the middle of the space with about a half dozen people dancing on the hood and roof. We walked around to check out all the booths and bars, and then we started dancing. I thought Sandra Collins was a good DJ. I enjoyed her mix of happy and hardcore techno. We got to dance for about 30 minutes and all warmed up when they stopped the music and pleaded with everyone to be quiet. We decided to cool down, so we stood by at the top of the enterance to catch some breeze. A comes by and spray paints FIRE EXIT on the wall. The house lights are up around the entrance. A guy on the mic is pleading for the people to be quiet for a few minutes. A very distingushed looking man in a uniform comes walking up the entrance ramp flanked by several uniformed policemen and firemen. Some of them were wearing red jackets with the emblem SOCIAL CLUBS TASK FORCE. We hung around for about 10 minutes after the police and firemen left. No music played. We decided to use our good judgement and leave. Storm Rave was forced to close. We exited out to the street and there were a huge firetruck with three times as many cops and firemen outside. A young man with a SR badge was explaining to the distinguished looking fire marshal that they have never had any trouble at any of the raves. The fire marshal was not paying any attention to him. We knew when we were outside that Storm Rave was not going to get started again. With the Happy Lands fire last year, the City College incident this year, there was no way they would ever let this thing continue, even if it was up to code. Somebody's head would roll if anything happpened given the number of cops and firemen there. The first priority for the NYC public servants is to keep their job. NYC press and politics is just too unforgiving. I'm not letting Jon get off *that* easily..... Info-E is a short booklet (an 8.5"x11" page folded into quarters) that contains straight info about ecstasy -- what it is, how to take it wisely ("Drink lots of water", etc.), what kind of things to watch out for, and where to go to get further information. This flyer has been passed out at various raves in San Francisco and the response has been overwhelmingly positive; there is a lack of accessible reliable information out there, and people want to be more informed about the drugs they're taking. So.... If anyone is interested, send me email telling me your US mail mailing address and I will send you a free copy of Info-E. If you are friendly with any rave organizers, let them know about Info-E too. QUEST REVIEW Hey all, I think my weekend has finally ended... (maybe? It's only sunday morning) But, Here goes.. weekend in review: On friday, we went to Quest in providence, RI. It was held in the same place as the Michaelanglo Raves (475 Harris Ave) , and worked out _quite_ nicely.. it was held in a 3rd floor loft apartment, which was incredibly huge, with a smaller chill-out room down a hall and off to one side. If you were going to Quest for the lighting, forget it. It was the typical assortment of Z-Tran's (Josh's) home-made lighting frobs... but, well done irregardless. Distengrator from NY played at around 3:30 AM (or rather just sat and held keys down). The problem with most "live" techno bands , is that they're not live. they're just turning loops on and off. Sort of a DJ with a few more buttons and a lot less sonic material. This probably explains why people like Adam X and Frankie Bones rank on these bands so much.. they say that by being a DJ they can create, mix, and scratch real-time, and give so much more than the live band can... Well, if the bands weren't just holding down keys and turning filter dials, and if they were actually _playing_ some music, they could vary things alot more. Just my $.02... As a whole, there was tons and tons of energy behind this rave, lots of cooperative people, no alcohol, and no stupid jocko types to bother you. Most everyone there was enjoying themselves, and it went off without a hitch.. There was even one police car outside the rave that stayed there the entire night, until the music stopped at 6 (30 minutes earlier than what they said on the flyers). After returning to Boston, I slept about an hour or so, and went to the loading zone Saturday night for 'good vibe'... It was excellent, and reminded me of what the tiny techno scene was in Boston about 5-6 months ago.. DJ Mayhem spun first, with DJ James Christian from Caffiene (NY) closing out the night.. lots of good trance and underground stuff. Almost no mainstream at all.. *good!* Great bunches of people ended up coming back to my apartment... unexpectedly! Seeing as they just left. In other words..it's mutating into a more > livable, real organic form.. a LIFESTYLE...even a practical one... There never was any "cyberpunk" culture. As near as I can tell, the whole thing was, like the suburban punk thing and the suburban hippie thing (and the suburban biker thing, etc. through time immemorial) was a media construct. What's scary is how some people buy into that image wholeheartedly. I still laugh out loud when I remember an article I read in an allegedly "underground" newspaper about the secret life of the cyberpunk who talked about "jacking in" (at 300 baud no less! this was 1988-1989) to a BBS while listening to industrial music and drinking Jolt Cola (vile stuff by the way). In much the same way that the straights got into hippie culture through HAIR (written by a couple of hacks and a guy who professed to know nothing at all about rock music), it would seem that people are or have been striving for a "cyberpunk" aesthetic based entirely on going to glorified barn dances, taking overpriced drugs and reading really bad sf novels that rehash boring old ideas in tedious ways. Say, what exactly is an "organic, evolutionary matrix" anyway (I've noticed that CP types seem to have bled the word "matrix" of virtually all meaning). Which "CP concepts" have trickled down to the mainstream anyway? Virtual reality? I envision a nation of virtual shut-ins equiped with Leggy Supermodel sex software. > It strikes me frequently that ravers, (sort of modern day hippies..) > consume very little, compared to the national average,of non-renewable > resources. They make up for it by consuming more than their share of overpriced drugs, overpriced techno compilations and dippy clothes. > I've also heard that the US ,per capita, consumes far more energy than > any othe country, something like 35% of the worlds resources with > a population of only 5%. I hate to sound too cynical here, but realistically speaking, I don't see the rave thing as the begining of any sort of new way of life. It may be a wonderful, sharing, loving experience for all and sundry, but ask yourself - am I going to be doing this in 5-10 years? Now if you really do see yourself staying with this for the long haul and trying to change the world, then you have all the blessings of heaven, 'cos sincerity counts for everything these days. My admiration for true outlaws, technological and otherwise, who live a life they love outside of the mainstream and the law without hurting anyone else, knows no bounds. But little of what I've seen in the various manifestations of CP culture demonstrates this. For every genuine free-thinker and kind-mad hacker soul I've met, I've met 50 losers who think ripping people off is somehow justified if it's done through technological means. The standard line I've liked lately to characterize the "cyberpunk culture" is this: "You think you're jacking in, but you're just jacking off" I have no idea who originally came up with that one, but my hat's off to him/her. - Dan ----------------------------------------------------------------- | Dan Parmenter |"Everybody don't like something and we all | | dan@gnu.ai.mit.edu | don't like you" - Richard Thompson | ----------------------------------------------------------------- [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] Date: Wed, 29 Jul 92 12:49:39 EDT From: djm@bedford.progress.COM (Dave McMahon) Subject: Re: Loading Zone > There's minimal parking near the loading zone. the best thing I can say > if you're coming from providence is to take 95 North and then > get off right before the tunnel, and take the exit marked downtown boston. > next thing you do is take a right onto kneeland st, and you'll see the loading > zone.. > -John > Yo Johnny, don't you mean 95N to 90E and get off before the tunnel? dave. Hey John, do 'we' have a FAQ here for ne-raves? If so, this should probably be in it. I don't remember how many times I've replied to this.... So far that I've seen, the 'Vibe Tribe' (as John coined ;)) makes it's way around town on the following schedule: Thursdays: Venus De Milo, Landsdowne St. (DJ Debo Spins w/ occasional guests like Onionz from NY) $5 21+, or $8 19+; ID's are required unless, of course, you know Elvis or some other Door person (no shit!) Fridays: Axis, Landsdowne St. (DJ Debo spins) $5 (?) 18-19+(?); IDs? -same as Venus Saturdays: (NEW) The Loading Zone 150 Kneeland St. (DJ Mayhem spins) FREE 21+ b4 11, or $6 18+; ID's are again required, unless you're a reg (?) There are usually some kind of after-hours things going on each night. Hoboken is known for lots of great bands, including the now-lamented Feelies. What this area is *not* known for is its dance culture. New Jersey clubs tend to fall into two categories -- meat markets that play very cheezy top-40 dance music and draw a late 20's - early 30's crowd, and meat markets that play cheezy alternative dance muisc and draw a late 'teens - early 20's crowd. I had an adventure in this world last night. It started out with me meeting some friends at a "club" called Jukebox Eddie's. Now would you trust a place with a name like that? I think not. But on Thursdays they have a good happy hour and usually play MTV hits like Soup Dragons, INXS, and U2. Not bad when you're only paying $1 for mixed drinks and they have free tacos. So we arrived only to find out they've changed it to COUNTRY MUSIC NIGHT. With Texas Two-Step lessons and all. I felt like I was in some bizzare hyperspace warp. [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] So we arrived at The Club House (such a cute pun) in Plainfield, Jersey Burbs, USA. I was pleasantly amazed -- the club was beautifully decorated with huge paintings of pop-culture icons on the walls, and had a great balcony bar area where you could watch the people on the dance floor below. It really reminded me of the old Ritz in New York City. Shortly after arrival we found out it was "Rave Thursday" (this is where it gets interesting you all). "Yeah RIGHT" I think. All these girls have on way too much makeup to have any idea what it is to rave. Fortunately my friends were wild enough to try anything, so we pushed through the posing, drinking crowd to the front of the floor (by the stage, more on this later) and decided to dance even though no one else was. The DJ could not mix to save his life. Even *I* can slap a record on each of two turntables and fade from one to the other. The little action and energy we did create would die with each song. But somewhere (maybe after me staring up at the DJ booth and screaming "faster faster harder harder") along the line we got some techno. "Oh good, let's see if these people have any Idea about rave." Objectively speaking it was abysmal. The DJ played 45 minutes of techno and then dropped back into the likes of Pearl Jam and A School of Fish. Besides my gang of three, only about six other people were dancing -- and only two other were really going at it to the techno beat. I can't tell you how *funny* this all was. Around 11:30 (things get started early in NJ) the music died and someone got on stage to introduce a band. I was nearly floored when Gimme the Gun took the stage. These guys play your basic rock-and-roll style stuff, sort of flavored a bit by Faith No More. They were infinitely amazing. If you ever are in the mood for 2 guitars, a bass, keys, and a very energetic and creative drummer and you can find them playing out somewhere GO SEE THEM. I don't even really *like* their kind of music, and was so completely blown away I bought one of their tapes. I've not seen a band so tight and energetic on stage in a very long time. The bass player really kicked, and was dancing and jumping around like a maniac the whole time. So that's the New Jersey club-rave thing. Very odd, but very serendipitous. All I know is that someone sent me email from your account asking for the Info-E flyer, and they sent me your mailing address. (How else would I have gotten your mailing address if you hadn't sent it to me? I definitely didn't look it up in the phone book.) If you didn't send that email to me, then someone else is using your account.
