I hear you, distort99. I am 28 and I started feeling 'old' at raves in NM. However, I find the bar scene despicable. I would rather see a room full of gals in sweatpants dancing their butts off than a roomful of cocktail dresses and high heels that make dancing impossible/awkward. I like the idea of people going to find their own space, even if it means to be on a bunch of durgs, than a bar full of sweaty meatheads in wife beaters sniffing their own armpits and hitting on the gals. The whole 'concerts style' rave thing like i posted above always feels like a friendlier space. And for the record, people come out to to bars with the same intent of getting messed up, and the same low regard for the music as the people you (distort99) describe below. In a way places like Studio B harken back to the really old days when lineups were much more mixed. Justine D of Motherfucker books there now (I think). Went to one Motherfucker party a while back which was really cool. Hipster electro rock, rave and industrial all mixed into one party. And I'm pretty sure the PA can hit the Brown Note. They offer a fairly varied sampling though you have to go multiple nights because of the one room thing. Oddly enough I found myself at Rebel twice in the past month. It's a "new" space that's essentially built on the ashes of Downtime. I don't think I had been there since eye liner and broom skirt days. Guess they've been promoting extra hard because it's new and the location blows (near Penn Station). So there are lots of freebie nights if you RSVP. It's not massive but it more than makes up for it by having 4 separate rooms of music. Two are proper dance areas with lighting and smoke. The next space is a lounge with lots of seating but on one night it was the most packed room with all the hot-dogging dancers. The last space is kind of a makeshift dance area made out of a leftover corner but it's surprisingly usable in the right hands. > I drink! I support the bars! Complacent is the only group that I know of that puts on events of decent quality while keeping the guests off balance... in a good way. They've been shifting to less risky events like having them at bars because they're a victim of their own success. Even when e-flyers go out less than a week ahead several hundred show up and flow out into the street in front of the semi-legal space. It's a promoter's dream unless you're the kind of group that has a strong anti-commercial component and prefers not to ask for permission to do things. Complacent along with some related crews are doing night at the Spiegel tent so it might be a good place to network. They're friends with Wolf+Lamb [wolflambmusic.com] who are very much up your techno acid alley. I think they used to have a semi-secret space where they were doing regular parties but I haven't heard about anything regarding their home base in a while. Hope some of this is helpful for you Dan. Haven't checked out Facebook yet but maybe someone will release band-centric apps on their new open platform. Sounds interesting in theory and marketing-wise but I haven't looked under the hood yet. Second Life seems very interesting and promising but maybe it's a little too early in terms of what's required of users technically. Like sites trying to stream Real video back when most users were still on dial-up. But it's still very Snow Crash which is pretty cool. Have only read some articles about it but apparently some are taking it very seriously and investing real world dollars in building a presence there. It's an interesting read on paper but I haven't dived in yet. Seems like a hardcore time suck. Curious to hear from anyone who has used it extensively.
