I wasn't overly impressed with the bands they had this year, but I was in the minority. I really don't like bands so I'm biased. I am however encouraged by the extra people it brought out. As for the edm, it was great! I can't really give a DJ by DJ review because I seldom stick around for entire sets, but I can say Craze is freakin incredible. That guy never fails to impress. And whoever the house DJs were on the beach, you guys were amazing! As usual for Starscape, the people really made the event. There's just something about the crowd that shows up there. I think everyone would say it was a success! I wasn't overly impressed with the bands they had this year, but I was in the minority. I really don't like bands so I'm biased. I am however encouraged by the extra people it brought out. As for the edm, it was great! I can't really give a DJ by DJ review because I seldom stick around for entire sets, but I can say Craze is freakin incredible. That guy never fails to impress. And whoever the house DJs were on the beach, you guys were amazing! As usual for Starscape, the people really made the event. There's just something about the crowd that shows up there. I was looking at this clip and it looks like he is playing on CDs? Nowhere on the clip do I see him handling any records or the turntables even turning. I was back at my college for a reunion at the end of May and I spun a short set in the disco. The kid who was doing the technical stuff says that they are thinking of getting rid of the turntables because no one ever uses them. All of us older DJs were shocked. Some of them used most or all CDs, but all of us have vinyl and play it. The kid told us that no one even uses the CD players anymore - they all just bring in their laptops, plug them in to the mixer, and hit play on iTunes. That is a sad state of affairs in my opinion. I think my original comment was about the fact that it looks like Josh is not using any vinyl - is this common among DJs these days? Or even if they were doing manipulation of the MP3s or anything that involved creativity or effort. What I was told that the "DJs" do these days is they just load up iTunes, plug in the laptop, hit play and then leave the booth. They set up their playlist before hand so they are not needed once they hit "Play." I would be pretty OK with it if it was their own music but loading up a list of downloaded MP3s seems a bit weak to me. Back when I was actively spinning and buying records you couldn't get new stuff on CD until like a year or more after it was released on vinyl, if it made it to a CD compilation. Of course that was before MP3s and the web and all of that. CDs are more portable but I just love the sound and feel and smell of vinyl. I was just complaining about how the kids these days hit play on a laptop and call themselves a DJ. The CD vs. vinyl thing was completely separate. Serrato is comparable to Final Scratch. Agreed. Who gives a shit about an iPod DJ? It takes talent to play out, late at night, and transport a crowd to a good place; namely, 1) a squishy, emotional, "left handed" ability to know good music, and 2) razor sharp eye-hand coordination to twiddle knobs and discs, with 3) little fear of performing in front of folks. Further, the "live" relationship between the crowd and the DJ isn't hidden. Its literally in your face. So anyone who gets up there and pushes a single button at the start and end of their set has ther rep immediately run out of raveytown on a rail. As to Deknow's point about a DJ playing others' music vs. a composer presenting his own, one can split the difference. For example, I would practice my set repeatedly before I played out, working hard to find mixes that created more together than what the 2 songs added up to on their own. IMO, art is a moving target that can be hit or missed with more than one instrument. I don't really care what medium a dj uses although vinyl would be nice for it's novelty in this digital age. But one thing I do expect is that the music be mixed live, the track list cannot be decided ahead of time. Crowds are dynamic and so should the tracks being dropped. If a dj is gonna come in and play something prerecorded or play a set where the tracks have already decided on then they can just leave. I can sit at home and listen to dj mixes on my cdplayer if I want that. The dj is there to guide the people with the music. If a dj is dropping tracks that don't move the crowd they need to try something new. A dj who can read the crowd and drop the right tracks at the right time is all that matters. Being in that booth is like being at the steering wheel of a car, if you have a preplanned route and you run into construction or make a wrong turn you need to adjust and get back on the right track.
