Subject: [ne-raves] Rocking New Year's Eve From The Land of The Rising Boobies Totally not work safe

 Forget Janet Jackson.

This is how they do it, "Wardrobe Malfunction" Stylee on *live* National
TV in Japan on New Year's Eve, 2007:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4hYsmIZtGc&eurl=

Make sure you're paying *very* close attention at the 2 minute mark, you
won't be sorry.

(h/t http://guerillawomentn.blogspot.com/ )

Added bonus:

Don't know if this one has made the rounds yet, it's a modern day update
of Woody Allen's line from Annie Hall about how he'd like to do to his
date:

"what Eisenhower had been doing to the country for the last 8 years":

I'd Rather Be A Matin' Than A Hatin' ~ Me

"Now, 75 years later in an abundant society where people have
laptops, cellphones, iPods and minds like empty rooms, I still plod

"There aren't a lot of things in this world that one can be sure of,
but I do know this; anytime you go by a House of Worship, of any size,
and of any denomination, that's filled to its rafters with people, you
can be certain that the vast majority of those people haven't actually
taken the time out to read The Bible, or whatever ancient, "Sacred
Text" that they subscribe to,because if they had read it, and
comprehended it, then that House of Worship would be nearly empty."

Subject: [ne-raves] ror-shak (db + stakka) new album out 3/13 "DEEP"

fyi, from a short press release:

Ror-Shak is a duo fronted by artists DJ DB and Stakka who on this title,
have created a down-tempo, drum & bass, electronic mix inspired by groups
such as Zero 7 and Royksopp. This debut full-length album will be released
digitally January 9th, 2007 through KOCH Records, before being made
available nationally in stores late March.

For their new album, Ror-Shak has collaborated with the New York band,
Morningwood's Chantal Claret and Pedro Yanowitz, down-tempo solo artist
Lisa Shaw, Julee Cruise (the voice on the soundtracks for David Lynch's
Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks), and young singer/songwriter/producer Wendy
Starland.

The album took a full 12 months to create, in order to fulfill their vision
of turning an extreme musical form, Drum & Bass, into something a more
general music lover could find enjoyable and exciting while still not
denying its roots. DJ DB and Stakka each have extensive roots in the dance
and electronic scene including DB's history in A&R where he signed a
project by Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim), Jason Nevins/Run DMC "Its Like
That" and Fischerspooner to Ministry of Sound. DJ Stakka started as a DJ in
1989 and added production to his resume in 1991. He is a legend in the Drum
& Bass underground, where he has produced hundreds of records, many
becoming club anthems. Remix highlights include Morcheeba's "The Sea" &
Africa Bambaataa's "Planet Rock".

Tracks from Deep have already been heard on CSI, CSI New York and MTV's
Night Moves.

very cool :)

will also post longer press release ...

(it's available on iTunes already :)

Please try to understand that this is not just another club night. The
people behind LOVE have put their hearts and souls into building a venue
dedicated to Music, Art, and most importantly Respect- it is very
important to us that you (our scene) recognize and appreciate this fact by
responding in kind, and treating each other and the venue with the respect
both deserve. When you see and hear the sound system that has been
painstakingly built at LOVE, it will leave you breathless, and you will
understand. We feel honored to have been asked to create an event to
showcase the deepest side of a genre that is mostly ignored and
undiscovered in NYC. Also we’ve thought long and hard about this and we’ve
decided to have a no- MC policy. Please understand, we’re not trying to
offend mcs, many of who are our friends, we’re trying to let people really
hear the subtleties of this beautiful music, Come and enjoy. Yours, The

With Arrest of DJ Drama, the Law Takes Aim at Mixtapes

By KELEFA SANNEH
<http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/s/kelefa_sanneh/index.html?inline=nyt-per>
Published: January 18, 2007

In the world of hip-hop few music executives have more influence than DJ
Drama. His “Gangsta Grillz” compilations have helped define this decade’s
Southern rap explosion. He has been instrumental in the careers of rappers
like Young Jeezy and Lil Wayne. He appears on the cover of the March issue
of the hip-hop magazine XXL, alongside his friend and business partner T.I.,
the top-selling rapper of 2006. And later this year DJ Drama is scheduled to
make his Atlantic Records debut with “Gangsta Grillz: The Album.”

Now DJ Drama is yet another symbol of the music industry’s turmoil and
confusion.

On Tuesday night he was arrested with Don Cannon, a protégé. The police,
working with the Recording Industry Association of America
<http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/r/recording_industry_association_of_america/index.html?inline=nyt-org>,
raided his office, at 147 Walker Street in Atlanta. The association makes no
distinction between counterfeit CDs and unlicensed compilations like those
that DJ Drama is known for. So the police confiscated 81,000 discs, four
vehicles, recording gear, and “other assets that are proceeds of a pattern
of illegal activity,” said Chief Jeffrey C. Baker, from the Morrow, Ga.,
police department, which participated in the raid.

DJ Drama (whose real name is Tyree Simmons) and Mr. Cannon were each charged
with a felony violation of Georgia’s Racketeering Influenced Corrupt
Organization law(known as RICO) and held on $100,000 bond.

I really don't have much respect for these "schools" and here's why.
Everything and anything you need to learn how to do what they will be
"teaching" is available on the Internet. Such schools have always just
felt like a means of taking advantage of people to me. For all the DJs,
VJs and producers out there, how many went to school for that? I do all
of the above and didn't have any teachers. Rather, I dove into it and
kept playing. And, school or not, if you don't do that, no school will
help you. If you do dive in, however, then school isn't necessary.
Their VJ "course" is a 2 session seminar for $400. I can confidently
say that, after a 2 day session, if one is new to VJing and video
production, they won't have an edge that is worth $400. They'd be
better off downloading the software and browsing the forums for such
software. Their big DJ course is $1500. Their full electronic music
course is $2,500. Somehow I managed to learn all of this stuff with
nothing but an Internet connection. If I had to pay the money they are
asking for in their courses, I wouldn't have been able to afford
records, turntables, software, or anything. I dunno. I hate possibly
shooting down people that are seeking to spread knowledge and make it
easier for people. But, these prices are extreme and, given my own
experience, and countless other peoples' experiences, aren't even
necessary to spend in order to learn what is being taught.

agreed; imo the purpose of these schools is to get the people who
don't have the 'gumption' to teach themselves how to do it.

otoh, speaking from personal experience, just a few hours with an
expert in a pleasant setting is often more useful than a month of
experimenting in isolation -- but again, nothing the internet can't
provide. i mean, just look at the wealth of expertise on this list
alone.

seconded ...

this is like sending a bunch of people to Community College for nursing and
then expecting them to be able to perform brain surgery.

It's impossible to really learn the skills in this short of a span.

At best they put out a bunch of poorly educated, unskilled performers (there's
enough of those in the scene already). If you need to go to a school to get the
drive to learn this, your throwing your money away. If you cant teach it to
yourself, your not going to be successful in the long term.

That's really sad. I was in college in Ohio around the time he was
starting out and I remember seeing him at a few parties in Detroit. He
must have been in high school at the time as that was almost 10 years
ago...

That's really, really sad news.

That's fucked up man... I just interviewed him last year --- he was in Brazil chilling out with DJ Soul Slinger... I was talking to him on the phone and he put Soul Slinger on speaker --- he was like "we're just down here smoking this dirt weed" I remember that conversation like it was yesturday....we were talking about commercialism and it's influence on the scene worldwide -- he seemed so full of life man... this shit is really bringing me down. If anyone is interested in reading the interview it can be found here... at the time he was working with all these Brazilian Hip-Hop artists and seemed so optimistic about it... I really can't believe that this is true.... so fucking sad
