Subject: Re: [ne-raves] RAVERS!

Wow, if you really think attending a hip-hop event qualifies as rave culture, you are even more of a moron than your post would lead one to believe. Let's take a pop quiz. Hip-hop is to Rave as apples are to:
A) apple sauce
B) oranges
C) apple butter
D) apple juice

Now I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that you'll need some help on this one, so here's a clue: the answer is "B". Keep that in mind next time you try to sound smart.

Z-trip was a breaks DJ from Phoenix who finally moved all the way over
into hip hop, basically.

He's now what I'd consider one of the best hip hop DJ's on the planet.
The crowd was *definitely* into it at both of the DC shows I've seen.
Easily one of my favorite shows this year.

There aren't exactly many underground events these days, which tends
to stretch musical boundaries. DJ's are playing what brings more
people in, not 'something new', which means some stagnation (and a
club scene, to boot) were in order.

But I digress.

I think my main point was that "DJ does not necessarily equal rave". Oftentimes you'll have a hip-hop DJ at a rave, but at that point it's just a meeting of two cultures, not a meshing.

Subject: Re: [ne-raves] RAVERS!

Sorry to hear you had a bad time. I missed the philly
show because I couldnt afford the trip back from
boston. Unfortunate because I saw him twice in Philly
before then, and both times were pretty intense shows.
He is one of those people that always brings
something new to the table.

And I agree with other posters, z-trip != rave. But
he does represent one of the better party djs (a la mr
scruff, food + dk, etc... not maybe the most
kentaro/mixmastermike/shadow-technically impressive
but record selections that are just on a different
level)

Sorry you had a bad time. Doesnt mean you have to be
a dick about those who enjoy it.

You remind me of me like 5 years ago. Burnt from the
rave scene, etc.

Good luck with that.

You're from Boston? Know of any good parties coming up
anytime soon there or Providence or somewhere
relatively close by?

Subject: Re: [ne-raves] RAVERS!

No ive spent the last 27 odd years of my life in and
around Philadelphia.

Was up in Boston for one month while I worked at a
hospital along the Charles river up there. Good
times. Great town. Expensive as fsck, though, almost
nyc like in terms of cost.

:::: ALEX WHALEN BIO ::::

Born in the ambient sounds of the early nineties, raised on the dance floors
of Fever, Buzz, and Twilo, refined behind the controls of Yoshitoshi.com,the
sound of Alex Whalen is about to take over the world. Ask anyone who has had
a chance to hear Alex, from Hawaii to LA, from DC to Ibiza, and you will
hear the same thing, Alex Whalen is a master of dynamics - moving a dance floor
from deep euphoria to uninhibited mania and back again at will. His first
hand knowledge of the dance floor, encyclopedic knowledge of records, flawless
track selection, and fluid mixing skills combine in a maelstrom of beats and
beauty to intoxicate even the most hesitant dance floor.

It's impossible to tell when exactly a DJ goes from being good to being
great, but it's easy to tell when the rest of the world takes notice. DC insiders
knew they had someone special in their midst four years ago when Alex played
his debut set at D.C.'s longest-running, nationally-renowned event Buzz. Two
years after that first event, and many sets later, Alex was invited to open
the night for Dave Ralph - who didn't even want him to be there! As a long
time industry veteran it didn't take Dave long to overcome his skepticism and
see the rare talent that finds its home in Alex Whalen. In fact, Dave was so
impressed with Alex that he he asked him to share the bill with him on his
nation-wide "Naturalized" tour, and to this day Dave and Alex continue to play
together throughout the country. Of course, it wasn't just his skills as a DJ
that the D.C. faithful had come to respect. When not manning the decks at
Buzz, he spent his days holding things down at Deep Dish's Yoshitoshi Shop and
Yoshitoshi.com. In addition to his duties as General Manager, he served as
their resident progressive "specialist", blessing inquisitive vinyl collectors
world-wide with a knowledge of progressive house that borders on clinically
obsessive.

But in Spring of 2002 it was time for a change, and 50 boxes of records and
3000 miles later he found himself setting up shop deep in the heart of San
Francisco. Over the next two years he added syndicated radio to his arsenal as
a resident for Thump Radio, helped launch a new house music venue for
Blowfish Music, and headlined for both Spundae and Release - quite an accomplishment
if you know the SF scene. With two like-minded musical souls, Kramer and
Nicholas Baker, he started a new monthly called Arrival, an ongoing night
dedicated to breaking new talent in SF's progressive house scene. And of course,
throughout the world, he continued to travel and spread his brand of
progressive house.

In June of 2004, Alex moved to Boston. Among other things, he is serving as
a resident at Avalon's legendary Friday nights, working with the R-Factor
team on a number of new projects, and, in a twist for a DJ, working on his PhD
in Political Science!!

should look into getting a room too, I'm sure I'll be wiped!

This Thursday at Club Phoenix it's
ALL-STAR BREAKBEAT RISE THURSDAY!

Massive Audio.net proudly brings the best Electronic Music DJs from =20
all over the USA to Albany, NY every Thursday night. This Thursday =20
is no exception! 3 of New York's best DJs will be in the club.

H-BOMB: Vinyl Beat: Syracuse, NY (Breaks)
With nearly 4 years behind the decks, H-Bomb will surely win you over =20=

with her funky breaks and nasty nu-skool sound. Recognized for her =20
tight mixes and engaging track selection, she knows what it takes to =20
get the Asses movin=92. Best known for her annual appearances at the Ho-=20=

Ho project H-Bomb has also racked up credentials spinning at =20
Grasshopper, Red Light Special, The Vibe Simulator and many other =20
large scale parties in the CNY area; also holding down a resident =20
spot at Trexx Nightclub, =93Digital Fusion=94 in Syracuse, NY.

DJ Reinz: Vibrant Soundz: Syracuse, NY
Dj Reinz has been behind the turntables for over 4 years, but his =20
recent success over the last 2 has created a well built reputation in =20=

the Upstate of New York. Having just moved to Syracuse,Ny DjReinz has =20=

quickly picked up where he left off, holding down 2 Residencies in =20
Utica,NY
Spinning both CDs and vinyl Reinz gets special attention for his =20
seamless, Artistic and energetic style behind the decks. Reinz Is =20
known for his Uplifting, energetic and high octane blend of =20
Progressive, Filtered, Electro House, with That =93Big Room=94 feel, all =
=20
fuzed together to turn the dance floor into a dancing frenzy.

Scooby Carolan: Massive Audio.net & Samurai.fm: Albany, NY
The sound of Breakbeat found Scooby Carolan in 1997 in upstate New =20
York. Instantly captivated by the syncopated beats, quick changes, =20
and complex musical structure of Acid & Funky Breaks, he began DJing =20
immediately. Now in 2005, 8 years later, he is at much at home in a =20
Drum & Bass room as anywhere else. His hard and fast mixes tease =20
elements of D&B while his melodic ear mixes for harmony & clarity. =20
The slightly slower tempo of breaks allows him to add richness to =20
mixes and helps to cross the boundaries of traditional Breakbeat, =20
Progressive. and New School. He has been know to rock 4 hour long =20
sets and has played all over the USA along side DJ greats like =20
AK1200, Odi, Simply Jeff, Knowledge, Jack McDevitt and others.

Subject: [ne-raves] Whistle Review!

Yeah, I'm a little late but better late than never...

So, I had a blast! And it looked like everyone else did too and really
that's the only thing that matters. :)

The weather really sucked, heavy rains all day and localized flooding made the
idea of even going a daunting one but I had already bought my ticket and
wanted to meet up with some friends I hadn't seen in awhile. So I hopped
in my car and made the two hour trek. And yes, the drive there did suck.

Ok, I'm there. Outside the club is a long line but they had a tent up so
we didn't get wet! Good thinking people! The line was cool, lotsa
friendly people. Got my ticket from will call and then got the most
thorough search I
think I've ever had. That was kinda surprising since the trend seems to
be towards less invasive searches. But oh well. So, now i'm in the club.
Have you ever been to shampoo? I think it's a great club, made up of many
small spaces giving it an intimate feel. And it also good for parties
where you need to cater to many musical tastes which they did rather well.
Oh, the club does have a main room which is amply sized, big enough to
hold lotsa people but not to big that it feels empty. And the sound in teh
main room is just amazing! one of the better sound systems that I've
heard. The only thing that I don't like is that the dj booth is off to
the side and kinda hidden. So, that covers the inside of the club. They
also had a large tented area that worked very nicely.

Now for the music. Fucking awesome! And what really surprised me is that
they had techno! And it was freakin awesome! Yes! Freaking awesome! And
everyone was loving it!
Dave Ralph dropped an amazing set of hard techno with crazy bass lines! I
haven't heard any techno in awhile but if this is where the genre is going
I'm very impressed! I've always been a fan of it and this is all the more
reason to love it!

The hardcore was sounding good too! I always love checking out the
hardcore room because there's so much energy there.

There was some hip hop in the tent but it didn't seem to go over very
well. Mainly bewildered looks of people who couldn't figure out what was
going on. Kinda weird. I thought it'd get a better reception but I guess
that's not what peopel went for.

DNB area was filled and yeah, it was dnb. I'm not a dnb person so I can't
comment but it looked like the people who were there were having a good
time.

I'd like to comment on the music more but I tend to hop around from area
to area to much and can't keep track of who I'm listening to but averall I
was pretty impressed. I didn't hear any sets that sucked and I didn't
hear anyone complaining about the music.

And now for what made the party great! The people! Very friedly people
from all over. And I was really impressed with the turn out from the New
England area! Tons of Mass people! Way to reprezent! The shade factor
was very low too. Very nice since I hate shade. Just lotsa of happy
people partying the night away all the way until morning.

If you get the chance to hit up Whistle next year do it! This is the
second Whistle at Shampoo and both have really impressed me.

KeNNy!
