Got this review off of DCRaves and thought I'd share it here. Seems like
big things are still happening in Europe!

Subject: [dcraves] Global Gathering, the Review

Okay, now that I'm composed, sober, and really upset that I have to be at
work, it's time for a review. Sit back and relax, this may take awhile. Oh,
and sorry for the double-post, but I'm lazy like that.

TRAVEL & LONDON

If you go to the UK, prepare to be frustrated getting anywhere. Travel was
an enormous pain in the ass.

Our flight out to Newark was cancelled. This meant that we couldn't make the
connecting flight to Birmingham, the next flight wasn't until the next day,
and we were basically boned. I asked very nicely if there was anything we
could do, as Jill stood behind me turning red in the face about to kill
everyone around us. The last few people had walked away from the desk
cursing, obviously having to wait until the next day to fly. The woman
apparently pulled some strings and got us transferred to a Virgin Atlantic
flight to London that hadn't been cancelled. I'm not sure if this was due to
her appreciating me being calm about the situation (unlike her previous 3
customers who were REALLY pissed), sympathy b/c we were flying overseas, or
fear of what Jill would do if we didn't get on a flight, but either way it
actually worked out for the better. Virgin Atlantic is a limousine with
wings. We sat economy, and they gave us these little night bags with
earplugs, toothbrushes, sleeping masks, the works. The seats were huge,
leaned back much further than normal airline seats, tons of legroom, food
was delicious... I can't imagine how much those tickets would've cost had we
paid for them.

We land in London after basically no sleep and spend the next 2 hours trying
to figure out how to get from Heathrow to Euston Station. Their system was
all messed up due to the bombings, and random parts of random lines were
cancelled. Finally met up with my friend Fran. We spent the rest of the day
taking a nap, then went to some pub with a bunch of South African Brits.
Very odd selection of music - one song would be Neil Diamond, the next would
be some Big Gay House. And they loved it all, and knew it by heart. A cover
band was there, and played Sweet Home Alabama. Brits have terrible fake
southern accents. I asked around, and nobody had any idea what the hell
Alabama was. I told them if they knew, they probably wouldn't be singing
about it. After it was over, I yelled (with my drunk-yelling-voice) PLAY
SOME FREEBIRD, and just got stared at. Clearly, they had no idea what
Freebird was. By the end of the night, everyone was grinding and hooking up
to the Greece Megamix, while Jill, Fran and I stood there just staring at
each other and the mountains of pitchers piled on the tables, confused. We
drank a whole lot of this drink they called "Snake Bite", which from what I
could tell was a combination of Foster's, Cider, and cranberry juice. It was
quite good, and despite my blood-alcohol-level, I woke up without a
hangover.

The next day we headed up to Stratford-Upon-Avon for the rave. This meant
many more headaches with the trains, getting the wrong tickets, etc. We
finally get to the S-U-A station, where there is a mass of about 30 ravers
listening to bad trance waiting to take a shuttle to the party. We had to
detour to the hotel first since we weren't camping, chilled for a few hours,
then hit the rave about 7 (it went 6pm-12am the first day).

THE RAVE

If the world were to end in 2 days, and all the ravers of the world were
throwing the last rave, ever, I imagine it would looks something like this.
On a giant abandoned airfield taking up many acres, the place had more areas
of sound than I could count. 5 or 6 main areas, each capable of holding many
thousands of people, were the focal points. The main stage was at one end of
a HUGE uninterrupted field, had no tent, and must've been able to hold an
INFINITE number of people. The other main areas were covered with the
biggest circius tents I've ever seen. In between, there were innumerable
smaller areas with DJ's constantly spinning - no tents, though. One guy was
spinning out of the roof of a tagged-up VW bus. Amusement park rides were
set up in a row in the middle of the party. We're not talking
church-festival, shitty little amusement park rides, ohno. We're talking
King's Dominion sized spinning rides, bungee jump, that thing where they
lock you in a sphere and catapult you in the air (very fun under the
influence, btw), that other ride where they launch you hundreds of feet in
up the air, then drop you straight down. Some of the rides were even DJ'd
(had a DJ camped somewhere on the ride with tables, spinning while people
rode). Many little stands selling this and that, smoke-shop-type places, and
"Laughing Gas". None of us believed it, but after some investigative
journalism, we were able to confirm that yes, nitrous is LEGAL in the UK. I
still can't get over this.

The three of us walked in on this ... spectacle, and nearly fell over.
Security the first day was very tight. As a result, things were relatively
under control and there weren't TOO many crackhead moments, given the size
of this place. There were a ton of people there, but the place was so big,
there was plenty of room in most places. The crowd of 40,000(!!!!) wasn't
supposed to really show until the second day. To my surprise, we all stayed
sober except a beer or two, and closed the party down.

The second day was COMPLETELY different. The place was PACKED. I wouldn't be
surprised if more than 40k people showed. Moving between areas wasn't too
bad, and if you stayed away from the OHMIGGODITSTIESTO type areas, there was
typically room to dance toward the back of the tents, and still see the DJ.
Security was VERY lax, and as a result, the insanity started the minute we
walked in. Doors were open from 12pm to 6am the second (and third, I guess)
day. We got there by 4pm to see Krafty Kuts, and people were already laid
out in the open fields. With the exception of an hour or two in the middle,
we stayed sober enough to dance our asses off to some of the best music we'd
ever heard ALL day, night, and morning long.

THE DJ'S

We saw more DJ's than any of us could possibly keep track of, so I'll hit
the highlights / ones we stayed at for awhile...

Krafty Kuts - what do you expect? He laid down an awesome set. I even got a
semi-posed up close pic of him while he was spinning. It was amusing to
watch him, with an early set, burn through a lot of the new & hot breaks
tracks so that as the night wore on, we found ourselves saying "oh yeah,
Krafty Kuts dropped this earlier." I was completely exhausted from dancing
by the time his set was over, and it was only 5:30pm.

Deep Dish - They put down a good set. Not as good as Labour of Love last
year in Toronto, which blew the fucking roof off the joint, but it was good.
We only hung around for about 30 mins of their set, and the tent they were
in was an inferno, so we didn't get to hear a whole lot of 'em. Some guy
tried to talk to me in British about them later on, but I didn't understand
a word he was saying, so just agreed that they were good but could've been
better. I guess that's a nice summary.

Oakenfold - I finally heard him. Only for his last 4 tracks or so before
Kosheen. That was enough to say I saw him, the 4 tracks I heard I enjoyed,
and I didn't have to fight a horrible horrible crowd or overpay to hear him
either because so much other stuff was going on (and he was on the first
night). Mission accomplished with minimum uber-trance-related pain.

Kosheen Live - I enjoyed their set thoroughly, but it wasn't completely my
style. I'm sure Jill will have more helpful input on this.

Adam Freeland - Really enjoyed seeing him for the first time. Was right on
par with what I was expecting, but I wouldn't call it an incredible set or
anything. Also, I want to say I didn't get to see a WHOLE lot of his set...
well, that, or something affected my memory of part of it. No idea what that
could've been.

The VIP area (in general) - WOW, there was some great funky house being
thrown down every time I was in the VIP area. I didn't recognize any of the
names on the list, therefore didn't pay attention to who was spinning the
couple of times I was in there, but there was plenty of room to dance, it
was nicely decorated, and the beats were chunky and funky, and I was in
love.

Ali B - Heard a good chunk of his set as we were jockeying for position in
preparation for Plump DJs. I would call it good, but nothing out of the
ordinary, breaks. I'd definitely hit up an event here in DC if he was
spinning, but wouldn't bend over backwards to do it. I'd never heard of him
before, but he opened it up proper for Plump DJ's.

Underworld - We saw Underworld from the VIP area, on a scaffold overlooking
the DJ booth behind the main stage. We had a crystal clear view right above
the booth, and of the crowd *exactly* how the DJ's see it. The place was
packed, the lights were bright, the crowd was VERY into it, and Underworld
was fan-fucking-tastic. This experience was probably the coolest, most
quintessentially rave experience of my life. Jill and I plurred ourselves on
the spot. I got the most unbelievable, incredible pictures of one of the
breakdowns, and Fran got a great movie of it. You can imagine, being that
this was my first time seeing them live, that I was completely overwhelmed.
If that was the only thing I saw the entire time I was over there, the trip
probably still would've been worth it. This set my expectations very high
for the second day, and even then, I was still overwhelmed when we came back
for more on Saturday.

Plump DJs - OMG. OMFG. Yes. Best. Set. Oftherave. They closed with I Feel
Love. Look, I'm having trouble writing complete, coherent sentences they
were so good. The crowd was fucking nuts, those of us that weren't piled up
in a cuddle puddle in the back of the tent, anyway. Even the bouncers were
having a great time, I caught a few of them dancing on occasion. I danced so
hard I felt like I was going to die, so I had to take a 15 min break about
an hour into their 2-hr set. Hands in the air the whole time... by the time
2:45am came around, I had nothing left, but couldn't help not dancing. Spent
the first hour in the very front, about 10' away from the booth, which was
only a few feet off the ground and open, so we could see what was going on.
Nobody in the UK can dance for shit, and they'd never seen anyone lock-pop
or do liquid (I was asked if I was a professional dancer. Seriously now...
although it was also nice being one of the better dancers there), so when we
danced people gave us all the room we needed and just kinda watched. It was
P-E-R-F-E-C-T.

DJ's I would've liked to have seen: PVD - seen him before, but still love
him. Stanton Warriors - they were SO SO good when I heard them in Toronto,
but after Plump DJs finished at 3am, after nearly 12 hours of dancing and
intoxication, I had NOTHING left. Carl Cox - still haven't seen him, want to
just because. Erick Morillo - Hell, I didn't even realize he was there until
just now, reviewing the list of DJ's to see if I missed anything... lol.
Judge Jules - say what you want, but I've heard so much old crap from this
guy that's classic, I just want to see him some day, but it wasn't in the
cards this time.

Once in a lifetime experience, met tons of interesting and fun people, and
so worth the money. Still trying to absorb it all, still don't wanna come
back to reality. But, now that I've spent 2 hrs writing this, it's time to
do some real, actual work. Can't wait to rave with my DC contingent again,
it's been a few weeks. Hopefully I'll have pics up by tomorrow.

Subject: [dcraves] my review of Global Gathering

Here is the actual review of the party and the music...the rest of my
trip in full is included in my livejournal post, which is here
http://www.livejournal.com/users/chillywill8e/244689.html#cutid1

The line to get in the rave was ridiculous. Getting in was a pain in
the ass. First, we walked 20 miles to what we though was the line. Saw
that the line was about 15 people wide and about 3 miles long.
Realized that this was the line for campers, and that we had to walk
20 miles back to where we started for the non campers line. Went to
the pick up window to get our tickets. Mike and I got our VIP passes
with no problem. When Fran went to pick up his will call ticket, they
told him his credit card hadn't gone through, and even though he had a
confirmation number, he had no ticket. He had to buy another ticket,
and they were only taking cash. Went over to the ATM to get cash, and
realized that none of the ATMs at the party took or debit cards. They
were set up to only take ATM cards, and since we had American cards,
they were treated as credit cards. Scrounged up enough cash between us
to buy his ticket, which left us with about 30 pounds between the
three of us for the night. Le suck. Spent about an hour in line trying
to get in, but finally made it. Walked in and was blown away. You walk
in in the middle of the midway, which is a carnival set up with tons
of rides, food vendors and merchandise booths. Walked around in awe
for a while, taking in the sites. The site was massive. Laughing gas
is legal there - $2 for a balloon. We didn't believe it at first. They
had alcoholic O2, which Mike tried but I didn't. The port o potties
they have FLUSH. 7 official areas of music on Friday, and 10 on
Saturday, plus smaller unoffical areas with locals.

Got our bearings and headed over to the Essential Selection tent to
hear James Zabiela . He rocked it out. Great way to start out the
weekend. His normal, breaky, techno-ey goodness. He dropped this one
amazing track...wish I knew what it was because I heard it a couple
times throughout the weekend and loved it. He seemed to be having a
great time and was totally on point, rocking out up in the booth. Mike
left at some point and went over to a merchandise booth, where he
talked people into letting him charge their purchases on his credit
card and taking the cash from them to raise funds. Smart boy, that
Mike. Missed Layo and Bushwacka!, which I was a bit sad about, but
headed over to the main BBC Beach stage to watch Underworld. They had
the VIP area set up behind the Beach stage, with this window set up
looking through the projection screen behind the DJs looking out on
the crowd. You could stand back there, look out over the DJs heads,
and get the full effect. Went back there and were standing there,
looking out on 10,000 people, when Underworld played Born Slippy. I
plurred myself. There are photos and video and I will post links once
they are online. I seriously almost died, it was the perfect rave
moment. After Underworld, we went over to the Global tent and caught
the end of Oakenfolds set. It wasn't nearly as bad as it could have
been. Kosheen came on next and they were amazing. Rocked out to Hide
U, Waisting My Time, and nearly cried because hearing them do Catch
live was so amazing.

Out of my way I am running,
I am gonna catch you if I can
Out of my way I am coming,
I am gonna catch you if I can

Everyone around me was singing along and rocking out. <3 <3 <3. Headed
back over to the Essential Selection tent to represent DC and watch
Deep Dish. They did a good job, but its not really my kind of music.
Thought they did better at Labour of Love last year. By that time, we
were cold and exhausted, and the party was ending, so we headed out to
get a cab to go back to the hotel, which ended up being an ordeal. I
think it took us about an hour to an hour and a half to get one. There
was a crowd of people waiting at the entrance, and everyone pounced on
a cab as soon as it appeared. Half the cabs had been called and booked
by people so they wouldn't stop. We ended up calling and booking about
three cabs and just waited for the first to show up. He ended up being
an awesome cabbie who drove at (literally) 100 mph on the country
roads back to the hotel. Stopped at the gas station, ate a ton of bad
junk food, and I think I was asleep before my head hit the pillow.

Woke up at 1pm on Saturday - the party started at noon, but no one we
wanted to see went on until 4. Ate breakfast, showered, got dressed,
and booked an awesome cabbie to take us there and then pick us up at
5:30 am. Got to the party, where security was much more lax and it
only took about 5 mins to get inside. They only had about 10 or 15
thousand there on Friday, with 40 to 50 thousand on Saturday, so I
guess they realized they couldn't take as long as they had on Friday.
Got in at 4:30 and immediately headed over to the Air tent to hear
Krafty Kuts . He played an awesome set. We missed the first 30 mins so
I didn't hear any of the hip hop he usually starts out with. Was an
all around fun set, including all the recent breaks hits like Push Up
and the Out of Space remix. I quickly realized that Mike and I were
the only motherfuckers in the 40,000 there who could dance. After
Krafty, Hyper was coming on, but decided to walk around and give the
two with me who wanted to hear things other than breaks have a chance
to rave. I could have easily stayed in the Air tent all night and been
happy, of course. I'm not sure what we did for the next hour or so, I
think we caught a few minutes of Junior Jack, but I'm totally not
sure. Headed back over to Air to catch the Freestylers. Heard Push Up
live, which was fun times. Danced a lot more. I humped a Brit. Or
rather, he humped me, but fun times nonetheless.

Where I come from we don't play around,
And when its time to party we know how to get down,
And where were goin baby you don't have to worry bout a thing,
Take my hand,
Move your body up and down,
And,
Push Up
Your body, Your body next to mine
Push Up
I gotta make that sexy booty mine
Push Up
And shake it, baby shake that ass
Push Up
I love when you feel like getting nasty.

Rennie Pilgrim and Chickaboo were up next. We kinda hung out outside
the tent and heard lots of bits and pieces of the set, but was
conserving energy for later and didn't dance. Wandered around more,
heard a bit of Erik Morillo, and even caught the end of Tiesto's set
from back in the VIP area, which was hilarious. Laughed at the
incredibly gay trance. Attempted to see High Contrast but the jungle
tent was not seeming to follow their schedule, which is not surprising
for junglists. Because of that I gave up on trying to see Mickey Finn
spin his old school set, since I had no idea how ahead or behind of
schedule they were. Headed back to Air to hear Adam Freeland . Awesome
set, although in terms of breaks, Freelands style isn't quite what I
am into. He's great and I respect him and would totally rather be
listening to him than not breaks, but he's kinda like the superstar
trance DJ of the breaks world. Good times still, though. I can't
remember if it was him or Ali B who dropped Bumper, but whoever it was
gets the official Jill seal of approval. Of course I hasn't expected
the Plumps to actually drop it, but hearing anyone drop it made me
squeal like a schoolgirl. I hadn't ever really heard Ali B before, but
he was good. Chunky, darker breaks than Freeland or the like, but very
danceable and fun. At this point, it was close to time for the Plump
DJs, and I was about to lose my mind.

The Plumps rocked my world. Rocked. My. World. They played a much
harder set than I have heard in the past, and I loved it. I danced my
ass off in the very front of the tent for the first half of their set
with Mike. Track after track was perfect. Hearing them live was
unbelievable - no matter how many of their cds and live sets I have,
none of it compared to seeing them live. They even managed to mess up
- Lee got his headphone cord stuck on the mixer and completely fucked
up a mix. It ended up being a hilarious rewind, and watching him stare
at the mixer like "How the fuck did that just happen?" for a few
minutes was priceless. And then, of course, the impossible happened.
They closed their set with I Feel Love. Seriously, I died. My favorite
DJs, who I just traveled 4000 miles to see, closed their set with my
favorite song on earth. Everyone knows I normally kirk out and jump up
and down screaming when one of my favorite tracks is dropped. I
couldn't even muster that. I think I just stood there, mouth agape,
when I heard it coming in. Then danced, then walked around with a shit
eating grin on my face for the next 20 minutes.

Ended up missing the Stantons and Evil Nine, which was sad, but we
were exhausted, sweaty, it was raining, I was cold, and I've seen both
of them recently. Walked around for the rest of the night chatting
with Brits (they all though we were "mad" for flying in for the
party). Went into the Godskitchen tent towards the end, which was of
course the place to be at the end, even if it was epic trance death.
The tent was huge, they had the most AMAZING light and laser show
going on, and even had strippers on poles on the stage. There were
probably 20,000 people in the tent. Listened to a few minutes of Eddie
Halliwells set, twitched from the trance, and collectively decided
that it was 5 am, we were done, and decided to head home.

I was about to be bitter; a weekly party/club night *ain't* a rave.

But the Living Room on Tuesdays, when I was there, had one of the very
best vibes I've ever fucking seen. It was bananas. And yes,
b-a-n-a-n-a-s. It made me teh happy, even.

::::  MAX GRAHAM BIO ::::

Producer and composer, Max Graham, is a multi-talented artist who has wowed=
=20
club goers around the world and gained the respect of his peers with his=20
diverse, but distinctive blend of dance music. Through incredible skills an=
d his=20
intense work ethic, Max has risen from humble beginnings to become a=20
worldwide recognized name. Max is currently enjoying success in the UK char=
ts, with=20
his smash hit, Owner of a Lonely Heart and in clubland, worldwide with his=20
vocal hit I Know You're Gone featuring Jessica Jacobs.
With talents across the musical spectrum, Max is probably best known for=20
known for his DJ skills. While the press has tried to pigeonhole him, Max's=
=20
sound remains undefinable. He has the rare ability to refreshingly combine=20=
pure=20
house music with his own favourite tracks from dance music genres such as:=20
progressive, techno, trance, disco and beyond. Max's trademark is a roller=20
coaster ride of funky basslines, energetic rhythms and uplifting melodies.=20=
During=20
this ride you are sure to hear a selection, of Max's own productions, which=
=20
include over 30 original tracks and 20 plus remixes.
=20
In 2000, when Max began producing music, he showed potential and promise=20
along with unnervingly solid talent, almost immediately. His first hits Air=
tight=20
and Tell You propelled Max onto the international scene, but not before he=20
had spent the previous ten years building his skills in the unlikely house=20
music city of Ottawa, Canada. Although Max was born in the UK, he lived in=20
Spain, NYC and LA before settling in Canada in 1989. Starting out as a =20
hiphop/scratch DJ, Max discovered house music in 1994 and was hooked. Within=
  months, he=20
and his friends had set up their own night, which led to the opening of the=
=20
now legendary Atomic nightclub. Max's weekly 6-hour sets, at Atomic, were =20
pivotal in Canada's dance music evolution.=20

Early highlights of Max's career include being invited to mix the fourth=20
installment of the legendary Transport mix CD series. The success of Transp=
ort=20
and the subsequent world tour, in 2001, led to Max being voted #23 in DJMag=
's=20
coveted Top 100 DJs poll, the highest new entry that year. =20

After touring heavily for two years, Max took some time off, in 2003, to=20
reflect on the music scene and his place within it. "Things were mad during=
=20
those two years, I was being booked to play trance clubs when I don't play=20=
trance=E2=80=A6
 I was feeling disjointed and slightly out of control, flying from gig to=20
gig without taking the time to make sure I was making the right decisions."=
=20
Feeling uninspired by the direction the scene was going, Max felt he needed=
 time=20
away to reset and rediscover his passion for music. =20

A trip to Southeast Asia and relocation to Montr=C3=A9al was all that Max n=
eeded=20
to regain his creativity and inspiration. He returned to producing, in 2004=
,=20
with a new sound and a fresh outlook on music. Max's new found energy=20
translated into what is shaping up to be his most prolific year to date. In=
 addition=20
to his worldwide hit, Owner of a Lonely Heart, Max has original material=20
coming out on his own label, Shinemusic, including the vocal hit, I Know Yo=
u're=20
Gone, and Time & Again. Industry leader, Sander Kleinenberg, is also=20
releasing a pair of Max's original compositions on his label, Little Mounta=
in=20
Recordings. Max is currently working on remixes for heavyweights Bodyrocker=
s and=20
newcomer Leah Woods, the daughter of Ronnie Woods. This summer also sees th=
e=20
release of Max's new mix CD for DMC. The DMC Mixmag Live series showcases t=
he=20
talents of the best DJ's in the business.

Max's rigorous work ethic and uncompromised love for music has afforded him=
=20
the time to both tour the world weekly and have a prolific production caree=
r.=20
As one of the new breed of DJ's that transcends the current media created=20
trends, he has secured himself an even brighter future.

Sad to say...the Utah Police are twisting and distorting the many accounts=
=20
that I personally have read (as well as the video, which CAN NOT lie, those=
=20
Camo's were *not* superimposed in)...
 Here is their press release regarding the raid....*
*http://www.utahcountyonline.org/News/DeptNewsDetails.asp?ID=3D17759&WN_Sys=
tem=3DSHERIFF

 Now, I know people who do drugs at parties..I'm sure we all know one or a=
=20
few. However, I never witnessed anyone hurt people due to the effects of=20
drugs (except one girl ONE TIME at Mango who I heard smoked dust and saw he=
r=20
saunter into the middle of the street, stop and jump on a car that was=20
driving in the middle of the road, then attempted to stop a moving Semi) - =
I=20
have been partying for AGES, since 93-94...I have not witnessed anything=20
close to what these people are recounting. Most people who do drugs ,=20
especially ecstacy, are quite laid back, I can only imagine them saying tha=
t=20
e will make someone "assault a police officer", and especially more than=20
just one patron (according to the beatings in the video).=20
 Also...they state that there were numerous DUI's...hey, jackasses...do you=
=20
think that forcing people home who were drinking at the party might add to=
=20
that tally? You preach no drinking and driving, yet you make kids who=20
_might_ have been drinking or doing drugs to somehow drive out of there?=20
What fucking hypocrites!!=20
 And when did sexual assaults turn into the number one reason for busted=20
parties? For as long as I have been to parties, I have heard of (again) onl=
y=20
one sexual assault...and to be perfectly honest...the girl was a whore who=
=20
constantly screwed people and regretted it the next day - then over time sh=
e=20
would say that they raped her. It would start out as her saying that she=20
fucked up and made a big mistake...then a week later, she was threatening t=
o=20
call the police. So, the sexual assault thing, I have heard, turns into a=
=20
big thing for the police to fall back on (lie about) and make up stories=20
about. Because they can (sad to say) - its a private situation, that who ca=
n=20
_prove_ that it didnt happen?!?!?!=20
 I can only imagine being there and witnessing what these kids had to go=20
through. I have been to parties, both legal and illegal, and the worst I=20
have seen are cops coming in, yelling a bit and telling them to go=20
home...but there were no guns, no dogs, no beatings, no SWAT, no tasers or=
=20
stun guns, and no stealing and breaking o peoples persoanl property. I feel=
=20
for these kids. It's almost a surreal experience for me, and Im sure if we=
=20
asked them, they would absolutely say that it was surreal for them. Like it=
=20
was a dream....unfortunately it wasn't.=20
 Alrighty - enough ranting...heres the Utah police press release...
=20
Utah County Sheriff's Office shuts down Rave Party in Spanish Fork Canyon.
  During the summer of 2005 the Utah County Sheriff's Office has seen an=20
increase in the number of large Rave parties that have occurred within Utah=
=20
County. Approximately four weeks ago the Sheriff's Office became aware of=
=20
another possible Rave party that was to occur somewhere in Utah County on=
=20
August 20, 2005. Tickets were sold through a Salt Lake vendor, Uprock,=
=20
for $20.00. Tickets could be bought in advance and directions to the exact=
=20
location of the Rave would be provided on the day of the event. Utah=20
County mass gathering ordinance prohibits the gathering of two hundred and=
=20
fifty or more persons without a permit, bond, and Utah County Commission=20
approval. Research was conducted and no mass gathering permit had been=
=20
obtained for this incident. However, a health department permit had been=20
obtained and EMS personnel were contracted to be on scene for first
aide.     From
several previous experiences with Rave parties of this size, a large amount=
=20
of drug use and underage consumption of alcohol occur. In addition reports=
=20
of sexual assaults, overdoses, firearm violations, vehicle burglaries, and=
=20
numerous individuals drive from the party under the influence of alcohol an=
d=20
or drugs. Utah County Sheriff's Office Detectives interviewed several=
=20
females that had attended a prior rave party in the Utah county area in the=
=20
past month that had been sexual assaulted. These females stated that the=20
combination of drugs and alcohol made them fear for their safety due to the=
=20
groping and sexual assaults that occurred during the Rave party. In the las=
t=20
year alone one near fatal shooting was investigated by Utah County Sheriff'=
s=20
Office at a similar party. Around noon on Saturday, August 20th, the=20
Sheriff's office learned that the Rave Party was to take place in the=20
Diamond Fork area located in Spanish Fork canyon at the Child's ranch. At=
=20
that point it was again verified that the Utah County Commissioner's office=
=20
had no knowledge of this nor had a permit been obtained. Utah County=20
Major Crimes was contacted to assist with undercover surveillance. Both=20
local and state SWAT teams were called in to control the crowds ( Utah=20
County Metro SWAT, Utah Department of Corrections out of Salt Lake and=20
Gunnison, Department of Public Safety and their helicopter and Provo SWAT)=
=20
approximately 90 law enforcement personnel combined. At 9 pm the Rave=
=20
party began and by 10 pm Major Crimes observed numerous illegal activities.=
=20
Which included illegal use of drugs, distribution of drugs, and underage=20
consumption of alcohol. It was verified that more than 250 individuals=
=20
were at the party, in violation or county statutes and by 11:30 pm law=20
enforcement personnel moved in to curtail and disburse the party. During=20
this process at least 60 arrests were made for weapons offenses, DUI,=20
illegal underage consumption of alcohol, possession of marijuana, possessio=
n=20
of cocaine, possession of methamphetamine, possession of ecstasy,=20
distribution of ecstasy, resisting arrest, assault on a police officer, and=
=20
disorderly conduct. A safety sweep was conducted after the crowd was=20
ordered to disburse and numerous narcotic items were located scattered on=
=20
the ground which included: cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana, mushrooms, alcohol=
=20
and large amounts of drug paraphernalia. A 17 year old female from West=
=20
Jordan, found by officers, had overdosed on ecstasy. She was treated and=20
released to her parents. Several local teenagers from Spanish Fork,=20
Springville, Provo, and Payson were identified at the party by officers. As=
=20
well as, numerous individuals out of the Salt Lake and Davis County
area.     Parents
need to be aware of the type of illegal activities that occurs at these typ=
e=20
of gathering. Sexual assaults, rapes, overdoses, drugs, alcohol abuse,=20
thefts, and firearms violations. The sale of drugs at these parties is so=
=20
prevalent that at this particular Rave party drugs were offered to a local=
=20
off duty emergency medical service personnel who were contracted to be=20
there. In addition two security personnel hired by the promoter were=20
arrested for possession of cocaine and ecstasy=20

Subject: RE: [ne-raves] Utah Police Press Release....

ok, that is fucking ridiculous the way they handled it, thats for sure. i
mean telling a drunk guy to drive? thats insane, in no way should it be
handled like this. But i do agree they should crack down on the heavy drugs
(its there job), but not in a way that hurts the public, they are there to
help us right? bastards....

Either way id like to hear the follow up on this.

Subject: Re: [ne-raves] Utah Police Press Release....

Forwarding this one around, from DCRaves. =20

a local dj and pretty decent guy, did his own
investigating...here is what he found out by talking to the cops :)

full thread here:

Final information gathering on the Utah Rave situation:

Since I was unable to get Utah County Sheriff's Department Public
Information Officer for the Spanish Fork Canyon incident on the phone
(3 voice mails, no returned calls), I asked the Sheriff's Office
receptionist if there was anyone else that I could speak to about
these events. Lo and behold, I was transferred to Sheriff Tracy
himself. Many of you that will read this will likely be skeptical to
say the least, but I found the Sheriff to be remarkably calm,
well-spoken, direct, and--my impression--frank about the actions of
the 20th, providing some additional helpful backstory that helps me to
piece much of this together. Sheriff Tracy responded to questions that
I asked about the events of the night, which seems to paint a picture
to me that is fairly clear:

1. The landowner Cody Bernell Childs (Trudy Childs would appear to be
his mother, and may be the deed holder on the land in question) spoke
with the Sheriff's Department AND the Commissioner's Office prior to
the party and inquired about the additional Mass Gathering Permit.
According to the Sheriff, he was told by both parties that the permit
was required. Here's where it gets weird: Mr. Childs never applied for
the permit. Why would someone go in specifically seeking information
about the permit and not fill out the application? Did Mr. Childs
deceive the promoters and tell them that it wasn't needed or simply
fail to communicate what he had learned? Or, perhaps, did Mr. Childs
report back to the promoters about the requirement and the promoter
dropped the ball? Then the other question has to be why did
Commissioner White fail to inform me that Mr. Childs had come by and
asked about the permit?

2. Sheriff Tracy shed some light on the incident that was referenced
as having occurred some weeks ago at the same location. Apparently, in
this incident, weapons were found on persons and on the grounds
(apparently abandoned by people fleeing the scene). While the number
of weapons is actually quite small (4), this does provide some logic
for the military-like response of the officers. What's odd, though, is
that if you check the arrest history of Cody Childs, you only see one
arrest in Utah County other than for the night in question occurring
on 28 March 2005 for a variety of charges including the posession of a
firearm--which would only be prohibited if Mr. Childs had felony
convictions elsewhere--and a variety of drug charges. Why he would not
have been shown as booked in the incident reported as "3 weeks ago" by
Sheriff Tracy is unclear.

3. Factoid on arrests that I wasn't previously aware: when "arrests"
are made, the vernacular is referring to the number of actual charges
filed against one or more persons. Therefore, the 60+ "arrests" that
were made were charges filed against 23 individuals.

4. Tracy reported that he was at the scene during the raid. He says
that tear gas was not used. He explained that what witnesses saw was
more likely dust from the helicopter being kicked up from the low
flight pattern. The tactical teams were outfitted for crowd control,
did have bean bag shooters, did have SWAT "tanks", and did have
tazers. None of these items was deemed necessary for use and were not
deployed save one "near tazering" of a man fleeing the scene in an
automobile under the influence. The man pulled over prior to the use
of the tazer. Sheriff Tracy says that precisely 3 people were taken
"to the dirt" during the raid. He stated that the persons subdued were
done so with knees on their chests. The female that is shown going
down in the video that we've likely all seen apparently started
kicking officers, which was not captured on film. He went on to say
that attack dogs were not used and were not "sicked" on party goers.

4. I asked Sheriff Tracy about the issues that, frankly, were nearest
and dearest to my heart: violations of due process by officers. He
stated that officers became aware of the party via flyers, purchased
tickets and received map point instructions like all other paying
attendees. Undercovers went to the party, observed illegal activities,
and called in the calvary. He stated that ticket stubs and flyers have
been admitted as evidence copies of which could only be released to
attorneys doing discovery. Similarly, the folder of permits, business
plans and other information that was "handed over by event security to
officers" had also been admitted to evidence.

5. I asked Sheriff Tracy about specifics on the 17 year-old girl that
was treated for an "MDMA overdose" at the scene and released to her
parents. Most of us know that an overdose like this is both hard to
come by and impossible to treat without hospitalization, so how was
the young girl treated. Apparently, the celebrations of having "saved
the girl's life" are somewhat overblown. The girl was presented to
site EMTs contracted by the event (apparently employed by the Spanish
Fork City Rescue Squad) with a pulserate of 176 (I get WAY over that
just being on the eliptical trainer at the gym and I'm 30...so
what!?). The parents of the girl were advised to take the girl to the
hospital for further treatment, but there's no information as to
whether or not that actually happened.

6. Sheriff Tracy provided some insight at the conclusion of our
conversation that I found to be most interesting. First, remember the
2AM caberet laws in Salt Lake City? In Utah County you can't dance
after 1AM. So, even if every permit in the book had been filed, no
drugs and no underage drinking were involved, the party could have
been shut down at 1AM regardless. Sheriff Tracy stated that he felt it
was appropriate that people lobby the Board of Commissioners to change
the caberet law as it is the county's legislative body. He said
(paraphrasing here...) that, "There's nothing fundamentally wrong with
having a rave or a punk rock concert or a rap concert or whatever you
want to do." He agreed that regardless of the public gathering a
certain amount of crime was to be expected, but if promoters would
work with his department, involve them in the planning, and have them
at the event that they could more easily hold individuals responsible
for their illegal actions rather than shutting down entire events.

First off, we would like to thank all of the people who have come to our sid=
e=20
in the wake of this deplorable incident. We apologize for not being=20
able to=20
provide you all with information faster. We are doing everything we can for=20
people who were affected by the actions of the police. We as community have=20
been=20
underestimated. The finger has been waved about our character and=20
ability.=20
Because of this, now is the time to stand up together and show the=20
world exactly=20
how we don't plan to take this lying down and teach a couple old dogs a thin=
g=20
or two about what character is. So, this is what we need to do=C3=A2=E2=82=
=AC?=20

To put a stop to any rumors, or false statements that have been=20
cropping up,=20
we would like to clarify a couple of key issues.=20

Was the party permitted?=20
Yes, period, end of story. Now for the reason this has been in=20
question:=20
According to the county laws=20

( http://www.utahcountyonline.com/app...ATTY/Chap13.pdf )=20

in Section 13-4-2-1:=20

Required.=20

No person shall permit, maintain, promote, conduct,=20
advertise, act as entrepreneur, undertake, organize,=20
manage, or sell or give tickets to an actual or=20
reasonably anticipated assembly of two hundred fifty=20
(250) or more people which continues or can=20
reasonably be expected to continue for twelve (12) or=20
more consecutive hours, whether on public or private=20
property unless a license to hold the assembly has=20
first been issued by the County Commissioners. (Ord.=20
No. 1971-4, Section 2, 7-7-71) (emphasis added)=20

It states that if the party was to exceed 250 people and go over 12=20
consecutive hours we would have needed to clear it with the county=20
commissioner.=20

The FACT is, that although the party was to exceed 250 people, it was=20
NOT to=20
go over 12 hours. This is evidenced by the DJ's time slots, and the=20
agreement=20
between Performance Audio and Brandon Fullmer. The permit was granted,=20
and=20
then seized by the Utah County police, clearly stated across the top=20
=C3=A2=E2=82=AC=C5=93Utah County=20
Health Department Mass Gathering Permit.=C3=A2=E2=82=AC?=20

It was not made clear by any employee of Utah County or member of the=20
Utah=20
County Sheriffs Depatment at any time prior to the event that anything=20
else may=20
have been required by law.=20

Were any individuals injured by the police?=20
This should be self-evident that this statement is true. However, the=20
issue=20
needs to be addressed. The police have stated that no one was injured.=20
There is=20
photo and video evidence to prove otherwise. This evidence will be=20
coming out=20
in the press conference, which will be occurring soon.=20

Did the police use tazers?=20
Tazers were not used; however we have sufficient evidence and reason to=20
believe that STUN guns were present and allegedly used.=20

Were dogs used to subdue party goers?=20
Yes, the K-9 units were present, and used in this operation. We have=20
testimonials and evidence to show that the dogs were used as=20
frightening motivational=20
tools in evacuating the area plus you can distinctly hear them in the=20
video.=20
Were cameras and videos broken or confiscated by the police?=20
This is true. We will provide photos and provide the actual cameras=20
that were=20
destroyed in the =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=C5=93operation=C3=A2=E2=82=AC? at the press=
 conference.=20

Was Brandon Fullmer involved in promoting the event called Sequence?=20
No. For both Versus and Sequence, there is a promoter involved named=20
Brandon,=20
however, they are NOT the same person. No question. This is being=20
addressed=20
because the Utah County Sheriffs department seems to believe these=20
individuals=20
are the same, when in fact they are not=20
Did the police officers find any weapons?=20
Yes, the police did arrest and charge one person with possession of a=20
firearm. This individual in question was the land owner's son, on his=20
own property.=20
Did the police seize large amounts of drugs?=20
Police did seize illicit drugs; a large portion of the drugs seized=20
were=20
drugs that the security officers had confiscated from event goers.=20
Admittedly,=20
this is a sticky issue. Police say security should not have those=20
substances, but=20
it is security's job to keep the environment as safe as possible from=20
potential harmful situations.=20

What are our feelings about police presence at these events?=20
Many times past we have hired off duty police officers to patrol and=20
attend=20
these events as added security. There have also been many times where=20
police=20
have come, and have walked through our parties. Had the police even=20
attempted to=20
contact us before hand, they would have been a welcome presence.=20

Was this event a secret, only for people =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=C5=93in the know=
=C3=A2=E2=82=AC??=20
ABSOLUTELY not! This event was in no way, shape or form a secret. It=20
was a=20
highly publicized and promoted event. If this event had been a secret,=20
or a=20
covert operation in any way, why were great lengths taken to obtain=20
permits? This=20
event was no secret.=20

What are we as promoters doing about this situation?=20

1. We are currently working with legal representation to ensure we do=20
not get=20
steamrolled by Utah County. We are working with Brian M. Barnard who is=20
considered to be one, if not the best civil rights attorney in the=20
state of Utah.=20
You can read about his many accomplishments online if you so desire.

2. We have set up the web-site www. Music-Versus-Guns.org . This is=20
taking a=20
bit longer than expected to set up the site properly due to the large=20
amount=20
of interest in this situation. However, we are in the process of making=20
this a=20
centralized site with information on a multitude of issues pertaining=20
to this=20
particular incident. Please visit this site to learn more about what=20
happened=20
and what you can do.=20

3. We are spending almost every waking hour to discuss this issue at=20
length=20
with members of the media. We are trying to make sure that the events=20
of August=20
20th 2005 are reported on fairly. We are also trying to educate as many=20
people as possible of the true nature of these events, this is=20
difficult but we are=20
working with a host of excellent reporters to make sure the facts are=20
strait.=20

If for any reason you have direct testimony that differs from what you=20
see=20
portraied by a story on television, or on the radio, or believe the=20
story has=20
been skewed from the facts to present opinion of the station or the=20
reporter=20
that differs from the truth, please feel free to notify Fairness and=20
Accuracy in=20
Reporting at www.fair.org which is a media watch dog group. Thus far I=20
believe=20
most of the reports have not been biased in any way so far but the link=20
is=20
here if you feel you need it.=20

Obviously, this is a lot of work, which is why we need your help and=20
continued support.=20

What can you do?=20

There are many different priorities with regards to what needs to=20
happen, and=20
we would appreciate whatever help you can give in these areas.=20

1. If you attended the event and were allegedly attacked or assaulted=20
by the=20
police.=20
You are priority NUMBER ONE right now. This is what we need from you=20
immediately:=20

a. We need written statements with explicit detail about everything.=20
>From the time you left your home, to when you got back home. Please try=20
to=20
leave all speculation and personal opinions out of it. JUST THE=20
FACTS!!! Also,=20
keep them as professional as possible; if you are not confident in your=20
writing=20
skills, there are individuals who can assist you with this. Leave your=20
contact information and FULL name at the bottom; along with addresses,=20
phone=20
numbers, email, etc. Contact information will not be made public!=20

Please send these statements to: Dimitri801@comcast.net=20

Many of you have already written eloquent and detailed descriptions of=20
your=20
night; thank you so much! We just ask that you add and/or edit anything=20
that=20
may need it.=20

b. We ARE be willing to videotape these statements as well.=20

Your experiences of the evening are the heart of this matter and we=20
know that=20
this may be a hard matter to discuss but the world needs to know that=20
you are=20
a real person with a serious grievance. If you are interested and=20
willing to=20
do this, please contact Dimitri at: (801) 577-8281 or by email=20
Dimitri801@comcast.net=20

We will require each individuals consent to post or use any of this=20
material.=20

c. Most importantly if you took photo's of any injuries, WE NEED COPIES=20
immediately!=20
There is a good guideline on how to document these injuries here:=20

http://www.flora.org/legal/legal_info/document_injuries.html -and-=20
http://www.fleschnerlaw.com/infolin...TING%20INJURIES=20

if you have not already done this. Bruises fade; cuts and wounds heal,=20
and=20
the sooner this is captured the better off everyone is. If you did not=20
file a=20
police report for any of your grievances out of intimidation or fear;=20
do it now,=20
with them or the ACLU at: http://www.acluutah.org/ There is a form=20
located on=20
the website where you can electronically file a complaint against the=20
police.=20
The police seem to be very curious as to why no one is willing to come=20
in and=20
report any alleged trauma or police brutality to the police; please be=20
sure=20
to include any of your reasons when you do this.=20

What if I made it out of the event unharmed and wasn't harrased?=20

1. Congratulations, you are lucky.=20

However, you are still an eyewitness account of what happened, and we=20
need=20
it. Once again, we are not interested in if you think the police=20
involved are=20
unscrupulous and/or immoral, with the intent of maliciously stomping on=20
individual's civil liberties. All we want are the FACTS about what you=20
saw. We need=20
these accounts to directly refute the lies the police keep reporting to=20
the=20
media. We have already caught some of their inaccuracies, and need to=20
keep doing=20
just that. Please state everything that happened the second you left=20
home until=20
the time you returned home. Include everything you can, who was with=20
you,=20
times, and details. The sooner you do this the better!! Just like=20
wounds,=20
memories fade =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=E2=80=9C hop on this people! Please include yo=
ur full name and=20
contact=20
information; name, date, telephone/fax numbers, addresses and send=20
these statements=20
to=20

Dimitri801@comcast.net =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=E2=80=9Cor- nadia_73@hotmail.com=20

2. Talk far and wide.=20

Do everything in your power to make sure every human being on the face=20
of the=20
planet hears you. This is not just about an event, it is about freedom=20
and=20
civil liberties; it is also about the police overstepping their bounds=20
and=20
justifying it however they please. Once you start talking=C3=A2=E2=82=AC? do=
 not=20
ever shut up. If=20
this is what happens today, and people stay silent, what will the=20
police think=20
they can get away with tomorrow? Silence will encourage their negative=20
behavior.=20

To the people who were not in attendance=20

1. Be it local or international, it does not matter; WE NEED YOUR HELP!=20
Not=20
only to spread the truthful word about what happened, but to do=20
whatever=20
possible thing you can assist us with. People in the media, public=20
relations,=20
internet related business, people who can provide additional legal=20
help, financial=20
assistance, or people willing to help with leg work are of great=20
necessity to=20
us, please contact Loki801@comcast.net =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=E2=80=9Cor- Dimitri80=
1@comcast.net=20
All other music and event lovers keep talking! You have our never ending=20
gratitude, you guys are so amazing!=20

Ultimately to prevent something like this ever happening again, it is up to=20
ALL OF US. We must have teamwork and solidarity =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=E2=80=9C hav=
ing unity goes=20
without=20
saying. This fight is neither going to be short nor easy; we want to ensure=20
that=20
it is not you who needs our help someday. In order to have good=20
teamwork, we=20
need to be able to communicate so please visit the website, do what you can=20
do,=20
and please feel free to contact the people below as needed.=20
