Subject: [ne-raves] Review: Kraftwerk > New York, NY > 01-Jun: Hammerstein Ballroom

Did you ever wonder what happened to those costumes from Tron
(http://imdb.com/title/tt0084827/)? Yeah, me neither. But after last night I can
tell you that Kraftwerk bought them at an auction and has been taking them on
tour (http://www.kraftwerk.com/photo/Images/greenStripes_700x448.jpg and
http://kraftwerk.com/photo/Images/menInBlack_650x448.jpg). Say what you want
about Germans, but you can't deny German precision engineering and their super
accurate atomic watches (http://www.atomic-clocks.com/euratwat1.html). I'm
pretty sure Kraftwerk went on at 8 on the dot. Take that American stoner hippie
jam bands.

I've gone to a lot of electronic music shows and even have a few toys of my own,
but I couldn't tell what if anything these guys were doing live. One guy might
have been singing with the most minimal of movement, but he could very well have
been lip syncing because the vocoders were on 11. My friend and I used to joke
that bands would just press play on the DAT machine. Guess the joke now is
pushing play on the DVD player. Sound and video were perfectly in sync. Four
guys in the sharpest suits standing behind lecturns on a barren stage with
flashing iconography and select words in letters 20 feet high was exciting and a
little fascistic and scary
(http://kraftwerk.com/photo/Images/maschine_700x478.jpg) . Caveat emptor: I have
a questionable track record for liking Germanic bands with confusing if not
disturbing imagery and manifestoes.

As far as how they sounded I think it was pretty much all the classics remixed
with a slightly beefed up sound for live performance and modern bass cravings.
Music on a system that you can feel always helps. Chillout music easily becomes
dance music with a bass injection -- at least it does for me. Was nostaligic for
me and didn't sound that different from all the best techno of the early to
mid-90s. Not sure how you can make this kind of music and barely emote beyond
restained toe tapping.

Stranger yet I think I only saw three people dancing. The crowd barely moved.
But this may have been because the crowd was noticably older and like me have
forgotten to take it's daily OS-Cal. And my excuse was that I was up in the
nosebleed section eating my knees. I think Hammerstein should install new
seating. With current diet, nutrition, steroid injected meats and genetically
modified food products people are a lot bigger than they were at the turn of the
last century or whenever it was that they built the Hammerstein. Was strange
looking out into the crowd and having such strong flashbacks of all my old
science professors. Kraftwerk is hands down the geekiest and nerdiest band bar
none and the crowds reflects that. Who else writes music about radioactivity and
pocket calculators? Architects, cartographers, typographers, designers,
information architects, system administrators, mathematicians united under one
roof. Here we all were staid, proper, well-behaved and conspicuously sober when
only 15 years ago we were flipping our lids on the same stuff in youthful
abandon and rebellion. Times have surely changed.

Wish I had bothered to check Kfratwerk's website (http://kraftwerk.com/).
They've got first generation looking GIF and Flash animation for snippets of
their songs that were the exact same graphics used in concert. It was certainly
enjoyable to see all this live, but definitely not worth $45. Guess my
non-committal response to my friend can be construed as a yes especially when
I'm reminded the day before the concert that we're going to see Kraftwerk. Got
to make up for this and make the most of Summerstage this year.

Well, it's not the smell of sweat, cigatette smoke and spilled beer that brings
back the memory flood of concert going experience. It's greasy popcorn that will
always remind me of Blur and Kraftwerk at the Hammerstein Ballroom.

I was going to go...after your review, Im glad I didnt.

Could it be that the reason why most people werent dancing was because
alot of people were forced to sit, as it seems you had to, up in the
balconies? Age does not mean that you cant dance anymore...tell that
to the 40 & 50 yr old ravers and tranceheads that run around mixed in
with 15 yr olds on the dancefloor. Its not an excuse, so the next
time you are out & about...get your booty an the dancefloor, Jasper,
you will feel liberated by the end of the night!! ;)

I went to one of the DC shows. Phenomenal, but too overcrowded to
dance. Ass-to-balls packed full of people, which isn't conducive to
getting your groove on.

Definitely one of the very few shows lately that may have actually
been worth $40. Started on time, went almost two and a half hours,
and was music you're really not going to hear anywhere else.

Oddly enough, person I went with commented that it could have been an
IEEE conference without much change. They were probably right.

I should disclose that I like Kraftwerk but I'm not a huge fan. I saw a lot of
big smiles so there were people who looked like they had a lot of fun. Just
wasn't what I was expecting. Heard they used to make their own drum triggers and
synths so I was hoping to see them do a little live drumming which they didn't.

Forgot to mention that for one track they had legless robots in their place. I
guess some people found it funny and ironic like my friend that the robots were
more animated and interesting to watch than the band. I thought it was not that
interesting and uninspired.

Definitely. But there was that one wild man raving wildly from his seat. Should
have noted for those who've never been that the Hammerstein is an old theater.
It has seating in upper levels but a huge general admission area on ground floor
that is standing room only. So the folks on the floor had no real excuse that I
can think of. Handicapped and disabled elderly were quite noticable -- canes and
wheelchairs. I'm staring at my near future and it ain't too pretty.

Hehe... they are really tight on searching for cameras by the way. Some girl was
getting hassled for having a camera and didn't know what to do with it. Didn't
wait around so I don't how that turned out. All seems idiotic to me because
cells with camera are getting to be really high quality these days. Can't tell
you how funny I found it seeing a huge wave of cell screens light up for
picturing taking as soon as the curtain was raised. Just remembered Flickr.
Looks like there are some cell pix postings already :)

Oh, I've no inhibitions when the mood is just right. There are some on this list
who've been so lucky to see me get down and stupid -- I've no shame sometimes. I
think I was even made fun of by girls half my age at Crobar only last year. If
you're going to get all decked out and pay a ton of $ to get in a club (got in
free incidentally, would not pay to get in that place) to listen to dance music
and stand around looking like you're too cool to break a sweat and not have fun
then I should be laughing at you. But I didn't because I was too busy having
fun.

Jeeze, sorry for the prolix and ranty me. Don't know what's come over me. Must
take something for my verbarrhea.

Jasper

Subject: [ne-raves] NRR: Boardy Barn

Next Sunday 6/12 I'm chartering a bus from Floral Park (Nassau/Queens
boarder) to the Hamptons to goto the Boardy Barn. There's a slight
chance I might do a pick up somewhere in Suffolk as well if I a) don't
sell out from Floral Park and b) have enough people interested to meet
up in the Smithtown area.

Those of you who know about it, you know you really shouldn't drive
home from there... hence, me doing a bus trip.

If you don't know about it, ask somebody or check out www.boardybarn.com

It's an outdoor bar that's only open on Sundays from 4-8. And they
have $1-2 beers. If you've never been, it's something you should do
at least once.

If you want any more info, reply back to me.

Feel free to pass this on.

This is a serious Memo of drastic proportion of the alledged meeting between

FRIDAY :::: 10 JUNE 2005

"BEDROCK PRESENTS: THE ZERO GOLD TOUR"
Take a very reputable label such as Bedrock Records and a reputable artist
as Pole Folder and together they present his debut album (and Bedrock's first
album release) Zero Gold. Since 2001, Pole Folder (who is Benoit Franquet)
has put out tracks on Bedrock Records including the now classic "Apollo Vibes."
He's hailed as one of the most talented and consistent producers in recent
years by John Digweed. When it came time for Bedrock to put out an artist
album, the first choice hands down was Pole Folder. Much anticipated and two
years in the making, Zero Gold can be described as a musical autobiography for
Pole Folder. He draws influences from Massive Attack, Pink Floyd, and
Radiohead to name a few.

Oh wow. This is absolutely brilliant. I might actually try to contact
the NY Late Night Coaltion and see how they're running the thing.

This is going to be important for us to watch and see what tactics get
deployed and whether there's anything we can learn for DC in case this
kind of shit happens to us.
