Date: Sat, 5 Aug 1995 23:18:45 -0700 From: Tim Horrigan Subject: Tim's Genesis review (not typical) X-To: ne-raves@umdd.umd.edu Almost everyone had a good time at Genesis. I didn't, though I did at least meet a few great people. Some dweeby little nobody who said he was the treasurer of the Panarchy House at Dartmouth College told me I couldn't come in. (I think the problem is that I indulged myself in an unrequited infatuation with one of the female members of the club, and she doesn't object to my existence on the same planet with her but some of her friends do. The infatuation looks weirder to them than it does to me because she's also half of one of those obnoxiously inseparable couples, and she is only apart from him when she's at work. I met her at work [her work, not mine, I mean] when her boyfriend was nowhere around and in that context my attraction to her was less absurd than it seems from her friend's perspective. Anyway, enough about my petty romantic problems, which are really not all that awful compared to other problems I've had...) I was allowed to stand out in the rain awhile and listem to the tunes in the chillout room and that was kind of nice. (I rather enjoy rain: in fact my current job is compliling a nationwide database of precipitation statistics.) I talked to Stu from Lebanon, NH and Nick and some other ppl from Amherst, MA. So, for me Genesis sucked, but it was still better to have gone and had a lousy time than not to have gone at all. And earlier in the day, I saw Mmookie aka Heinous again, who abruptly disappeared from Hanover in February but who has been doing great during the intervening half-year and is thinking of returning to the fall. It was very nice to see her again. It was also nice to finally meet Chris Dags, Dylan Drazen and Mike D, though I didn't talk to them as much as I'd like. Chris will have some pix up on his web site today (Sunday.) I'm the dumb-looking person in the paisley shirt and the Charlotte Hornets cap. (I'm not from North Carolina: I like that hat because my favorite aunt is named Aunt Charlotte.) I heard it was pretty crowded downstairs in the main room anyway, so it's no great loss than I was not around. Aside from my difficulties (largely my own fault anyway), the only bad part was the parking was a little fucked up. There were some spaces on a circular drive in front of the house, but these had to be kept clear. Ppl were directed to some relatively hard-to-find spaces on the Dartmouth College campus when there was four public lots within one block of the house with room for about 1000 vehicles (many more than needed for Genesis.) I guess the party was relatively successful on the whole. Hopefully we will hear from ppl who actually got inside. --Tim Horrigan horrigan@aol.com PS: I don't want to put down Panarchy members in general, just that one dweeby little nobody. Oh well, every organization needs at least one dweeby litle nobody to do the crappy jobs everyone else is too cool to do :-) Most Panarchy kids are very wonderful individuals, and Brian who hosted the party is definitely one of that majority, as he certainly proved by going to all the trouble to produce Genesis for free. I met lots of wonderful people, many of whom I've known virtually for a little while. Wow. The party rocked. My god. Dylan's set made me dance so crazy, I puked. No shit. What's that?) at around 4 PM, to find Garret and a few other people on the front porch sitting around, mellowing out. Turns out there wasn't much of a BBQ, cuz it had been raining earlier. Oh well. I brought up my friends Ben, Lisa, and Thadius (Lisa and Thad being gothic-types) and we chilled out for quite a few hours with a bunch of great people, some of whom I had virtually known from either here or vrave. Some of the DJs started practicing at maybe 9ish, and at maybe 10 or so Frequency-M played a mini set, which kicked. Man, this dude can really spin some phat acid! I was very happy, cuz aceeeed is my fav. flava these days. The party started off being mostly house, which is great fun, but not me favorite. I danced a bit, but spent most of my time hanging out upstairs or outside with some of the great people I was meeting. At 4:00 I think Dylan Drazen came on, and man, his set was probably one of the coolest sets that I've ever heard, if not _the_. It was mostly what I'd call hard acid trance, and it got my body to MOVE. In fact, at one point I realized I was starting to get sick I was dancing so hard, and then I started dry-heaving right there on the dancefloor, so I ran upstairs WICKED quick and puked in the toilet. And I was totally straight, other than cigs and a little ephedrine. So basically, Dylan's set was mind-blowing. Uh. Wow. The rest of the night was pretty acidy, with Ain (sp?) who was spinning for her first time (and she rocked! :) ) and then frequency-M again. I don't think I missed anyone... Oh btw, jimmy hat really started it all off, then I don't quite remember the order but it might have been Space, Lettuce, Kricket (who is Brian Cina of the list who threw the party) and then dylan... General remarks: This was an A+ party, IMO. The location was sweet, this ex-fraternity house that was still Dartmouth housing. The vibe was phat with a big ol' PH. It seemed like almost everybody knew each other, everyone was very happy and nice... Basically it was perfect. Not a lot of drugs at all, which was pretty nice. We were high on vibe! :) Brian Cina, who threw the party, is great. I can't believe that this was the first rave he put on. He's a really great guy, and was totally there out of the goodness of his heart. The party was free, btw. I met so many great people, I can't possibly list them all... You all know who you are, and I love each and every one of you! :) *hugz* The East coast scene is not dead. This was in fact the perfect name for this party -- Genesis. But, as much as I sometimes like writing I'm not in the mood for an overly long sit here right now so I'll try and keep it short . . . I walked over to Beat Non Stop to meet up with FREQUENCY M who was giving me a ride as well as spinning and then we got some good Indian buffet at a joint next to Daddy's near Berklee. Mark finished his record shopping at Boston Beat and then we headed over to his pad so he could get down the BPM's, and all the time we talked about music and he told me wassis like to DJ and a little bit about everything. We headed out in his sportscar at about 6 or so. Oh yes, I feel bad for a 'lollipop' out there because apparently I punted her out of a ride because of a slight email snafu. =( The space was a frat house (re: now coed living group) at Darmouth in the middle of a residential block. Large, with big columns in front. Unfortunately it seemed that the space was not suited much for dancing and more for just hanging out, but . . . with a few modifications and rearrangements =) we made it feel more like a place in no space. One of the big problems with the space originally was, in hindsight, the exit sign, the brightest light in the room. The exit sign would have been okay with a brighter room but otherwise it attracted attention to the stairs, reminding you that you were in the basement in a house. Once the exit sign had a brown grocery bag over it the room was much darker with more of that "i could get lost in here feeling." The chill room next door was also way too dark at first with only one red light--It was so dark I felt scared in there because you couldn't see a back corner when you walked in at all. With two red lights it was a perfect chill room (though it might have been better used as a second dance space) and most of the "ravers" ended up there as the night wore on. Anyhow, as you might guess from my less than enthusiastic tone I was a bit diappointed at first; the night started slowly but then we did get there super early (8 or so). I felt uncomfortable because the "non-ravers" who lived there didn't seem like they were welcoming us with open arms too much . . . and since their house would inevitably get trashy and I was getting some suspicious looks from the bongo players I wondered if we were imposing on their hospitality. Anyway, I went out and got some Chinese to get away from everybody, then came back and nobody wanted any food, but Shana, a friend who actually goes to Dartmouth now, showed up, and then Mark (FREQUENCY M ) started the party up by accidentally playing some hard house (?). . . . just what the doc ordered! I started feeling much better after starting to sweat instead of waiting around for something to happen I could dance and forget the "limitations" of the dance floor and the "suburban" , "panhellenic" feel of the space. . . =) JIMMY HAT spun a good set like he always does, but sorry Jimmy! I'm just not too much into house anymore. I just feel like I'm dancing too slow!! LETTUCE was okay but I felt like I heard his set somewhere before . . . like I know i heard some of those records at the Honeysuckle ***law. KRICKET (Brian Cina, who threw the party) had a terrible time mixing (Mark remarked that he committed one of the cardinal sins of DJaying when I asked him did that actually happen or was I imagining it?) but I actually liked the trax he played, though it was difficult to really get into it with little flow in between records. Mmmm. . sorry, but I was upstairs during all of SPACE's set. Let's see did I forget anybody before DYLAN DRAZEN? . . . . . . . who a shit man that was a set staright from hell what can i tell you! DYLAN threw a tantrum in the kitchen like ten minutes before his set saying I hate this shit for some reason he was pissed to hell at space. An mem and mark thought it was pretty kewl to see DYLAN who's usually so calm just kind of loose it right then. I went back downstairs and the strobe was pointed straight right out at the crowd, real harsh like as you can imagine with the turntables up on the bar. REal dark all around the place. Kricket, man he introduces DYLAN DRAZEN from N_Y_C who's gonna spin some hardcore--you know it man, hardcore's the score! and it was the most evil and pounding beat i think i have evuh heard in my life! I just wanted to yell and scream and rant and rave I was in so much pain i think and DYLAN's up there with an evil grin on his face. I just kept goin' and goin' and couldn't stop and pretty soon only the hardcores were slammin on the floor in front of that wicked ass strobe. With only two shitty littly fans to keep kewl by. not heaven but hell, man , was what it was and there in front was a DEMON cracking his whip screaming DANCE DANCE UNTIL YOU DIE U HUH HUH HUH HEH HEH M HA HA HA HA! pretty soon i was dead and i crawled into the corner and started feeling real depressed like and I almost started crying, heh. Then after a while DYLAN DRAZEN decided he would be merciful and the music got really upbeat, almost fun, and I went back and hopped around to the rest of his set. HEIN(OUS) spun a wild set, really fast and strange, but I'd already been crucified by Dylan and sat in the kitchen with Mark. FREQUENCY M came on at around 6:30 playing some fast trancy stuff ("acid", he said) and I got pumped up again and danced like a maniac for about thirty minutes on adrenalin before deciding to listen to my peeling toe and such. The floor had cleared out by then and there was plenty of space for that "morning dance." Did Jimmy go on at all after that cuz I heard he decided to just close down at eight or so. ANyhow, lot's of Boston kru, a good time with good music, a strange space, a memorable party . . . hell even the bubbles seemed to go! Well, judging by what I saw from the street, the house looked OK afterwards. Maybe even better than before. (Those bongo-players and other non-ravers are mostly friends of mine but for various boring reasons most of the friendships are in a state of disarray at the moment. I was unable to make amends in time for the Rave and hence I didn't really get to go, though a fellow named Bill whom I earlier very unjustly described as [oh to hell with it let's not quote what I said] did let me hang out in the rain out front which I did for an hour or so. In spite of what I said before, he's OK and he was sure working his butt off keeping order out front, which is the toughest job at any event-- and he even did it with a smile, which is something he's normally too cool to do (smile, I mean, not work...) Then, I wandered near the front and a ghostly voice told me to go away. I was worried it might be a hallucination, but in fact it really was a fellow who had every right to tell me to go away (though if _I_ were in his situation, I would in fact have tried to make sure that I was at the party, but of course I'm in my situation and he's is in his, not the other way around, and that's probably how's it supposed to be... oh well...) He was hiding in the darkness behind some pillars. It seemed sort of funny at the time, though one of the house officers flamed me royally in the next day's batch of email, which was kind of upsetting. I wouldn't be too offended about the Panarchy Kids' cautious welcome. They are a cautious group of people: basically this organizations encompasses almsot all of the few truly creative and forward-thinking people at what is otherwise a profoundly conservative university (though not quite as conservative in the right-wing political sense as outsiders would believe from the notoriety of the Dartmouth Review, which NOT a Dartmouth College publication though it is published in Hanover.) Dartmouth is in turn part of Hanover, which is a tiny speck of cosmopolitan culture in the midst of a vast mountainous wasteland, so a little alienation is inevitable. Really, they're OK, as they proved by throwing such a successful party. >Anyway, I went out and got some Chinese to get away from everybody, >then came back and nobody wanted any food Mrs. Ou's is the best of the three. The Panda House is overrated (though it's the place to go to see and be seen if you have a lunch date.) The Mei Mei is the cheapest, and I try to go there at least once a week to keep the nice but exhausted young couple who own the place in business. much later: >DYLAN threw a tantrum in the kitchen like ten minutes before his set >saying I hate this shit for some reason he was pissed to hell at >space. There's some weird energy in that kitchen. Something bizarre happen there at every event the house hosts. For example, I once nearly filled the whole room with soapsuds trying to wash one drinking glass in the sink. I cleaned up the mess and washed all the dishes and this kid named Dave who is very sweet but very flusterable (not in town this summer) came in and yelled at me just as I was finishing up. "You didn't have to do that! You really didn't." "But, Dave I did," I replied, "I didn't have to, but I did. And it had to be done!" (Hmm, I was being a bit of a dweeb that night.) That was a different party, however: in fact they weren't even playing Techno music that night. (It was an excellent though not very concise local band, kind of Phish-meets-Hot-Tuna kind of thang, named the Ed Riley Trio, who are a five-piece band, none of whom are named Ed or Riley.) --Tim Horrigan horrigan@eworld.com PS: Brian/Kricket's quite a good DJ, actually: he was probably physically and mentally exhausted by the time he finally got around to performing, so you didn't hear him at his best. I remember one party he did in January at the same place where the amp shorted out in the middle of the set, but the dancing went on in silence. I suppose it's a really good groove if it goes on even when the music stops! Heh. Dylan and I were downstairs talking record talk and he was throwing a few records on and then he's like you play for a while. So I play a few fluffy hard house records (well, fluffy, compared to the hard stuff I've been playing lately), Dylan goes upstairs (I think, I'm in my own world at this point). I'm Never got a chance to tell ya Jimmy, but it was a great set. Tight mixes and a great flow to it. Did a real good job of packing the floor and setting up the night. > DYLAN DRAZEN from N_Y_C who's gonna spin some hardcore--you know it > man, hardcore's the score! and it was the most evil and pounding > beat i think i have evuh heard in my life! I just wanted to yell and > scream and rant and rave I was in so much pain i think and DYLAN's up > there with an evil grin on his face. I just kept goin' and goin' and > couldn't stop and pretty soon only the hardcores were slammin on the > floor in front of that wicked ass strobe. With only two shitty > littly fans to keep kewl by. not heaven but hell, man , was what it > was and there in front was a DEMON cracking his whip screaming DANCE > DANCE UNTIL YOU DIE U HUH HUH HUH HEH HEH M HA HA HA HA! pretty soon This set was killer (well, it didn't kill anyone, but it did make someone puke). I'm in a corner resting at this point trying to make sure I'm awake for my set at 6.30 and I'm thinking he's going to kill them, they'll all be dead before his set is over. Dylan, it was incredible. You said you've never played that hard in your life before, you should do it more often. > of space for that "morning dance." Did Jimmy go on at all after that > cuz I heard he decided to just close down at eight or so. No, we shut it down after my set. If I had known I wouldn't have had Jimmy dragged out of his car. In fact I would have shut down about a half hour earlier as I was barely able to keep myself up towards the end of my set, and the dancers felt the same. I started with a lot of energy in my set trying to keep them going on adrenaline. But I overdid it and drained them out (and myself) too early. -- Frequency M / Mark Sironi email: mjs@crl.com www: http://www.crl.com/~mjs/ (send mail for demo tapes or booking info) A man with one watch knows what time it is.
