X-To: NE-Raves NE-Ravers (and VRavers) abound, PLUR everywhere, a PHAT venue, and Josh Wink making us all wet our pants!!!! (well, maybe not all of us, but I couldn't get enough of his set). The Big Sekkrit was kinda calm, but Donato, Jimmy Hat, and Dylan Drazen displayed SKEEEEELZ at the turntables, and I got to meet so many beautiful people! Hugs to Lettuce Bee, MikeD, Bob Baxter, Neith (who probably still doesn't remember having met me in the past), Sprockett, Scooter and Jeannie F who I saw later that night (still don't have your correct email address, hon), anyone else whose name I might have forgotten, and mad props to Dag, who was nice enough to make about a million more of those "how to behave yourself at raves"-type flyers that i was going to hand out at the rave. By the way, those went over well, and many people I handed them to thanked me for passing them out. And a big hug to Pomegranite, who handed out lollipops with a tag on them relaying the same message. I LOVE ALL YOU GUYS :'( Thw Worcester Auditorium was an amazing place to have a rave (complete with multiple bathrooms and RUNNING COLD WATER!!) The upstairs dance room was beautiful, with, like, fifty-foot ceilings and this really nice mural that all sorts of people were staring at and analyzing (I wonder what they were saying). Thankfully, they were allowing water bottles in. The one really odd thing about security, though, was that they weren't allowing wallet-chains. Huh? :-P The only DJ highlight for me was WINKWINKWINKWINKWINKWINK!!!!! Cosmic Baby was interesting to listen to (and that's all most people were doing), and I just wasn't in the mood for the hard breakbeats that followed. But Wink's set was incredible!! I can't remember the last time music went THROUGH me like that. Whoah! Lotsa vibe, too. I got so many smiles all night. That's my $.02. I left a little early. Was there an after-party? Lovin life (but I'm reel tyerd), -Terminata Ed Date: Sun, 5 Mar 1995 21:01:07 -0400 From: Bob Baxter Subject: Baby (Sacre) Bleu X-To: Gravitational Arch of the NorthEast Hi folks, First off, thanks to Chris, Jimmy, and all you guys for the pre-party at WPI. Without it, I would have been stumbling around not knowing who was who. Secondly, that line outside was bullshit. My waiting time outside was close to 2.5 hours -- I didn't get in until 1:30. I know this happens from time to time, but I figured people would learn from past mistakes. Thirdly, BB turned out to be a dope party. By the time I got in, Cosmic Baby was performing. He didn't do a whole lot for me. A lot of people were just standing around, watching him play. My perception of CB's music may have been due to a slight chip on my shoulder, after having been frozen and shoved outside. When DJ Rap came on, I was like "this sucks, let's find a place to sit down", then I did. Like others have written, Wink came on, and the place went into overdrive. I had such a wickedly good time in the period from 4 to 7 AM. I made myself hoarse whooping it up and yelling, but it was great. The place started getting hot and sweaty, which I love. I was perspiring so much, I finally had to take my shirt off. Baby Blue is only the third party I've ever done this at. One thing I was really into last night was giving people massages and neckrubs. I was just going around to people and giving massage after massage. I swear, I must have rubbed at least 25 necks last night, during that 3 hour period. Male, female, sweaty, non-sweaty, t-shirt clad or bare skin, I did them all. Besides using my bare hands, I had one of those Ladybug personal massagers. They're like 12 bucks at Pergaments. Unfortunately, it is now in the possession of some girl named Laura, from Vermont. :( If you ever want to make friends real fast, invest in one of these little gems. It beats the hell out of a bumble ball, trust me. Did anyone notice the "raver-clad" plainclothes security. They were going around wearing Grateful Dead t-shirts and long stocking caps. I was dancing on one of the speaker stacks, and this security guy flashes me a badge, saying I can sit, but not dance on the stacks. Also, the best costume award goes to the couple in the blue and white outfits. The guy was dressed up like a rabbit, with a big "e" on his chest. Real friendly, too. I'm still in a fine mood. When I came in, I wound up giving neckrubs and hugs to everyone in my family, including my dog and cat. I kid you not. Hugs to all the folks I met. P.S. Check out "The Critic" on Fox. REspect? X-To: NE-RAVES@UMDD.UMD.EDU Baby Blue was.. almost exactly what I expected. Now, I didn't hear wink's set, so maybe that would have made the night for me. As it was, the only two good points of the evening were DJ RAP and talking with Andrew. I came to this party expecting to be at a wak, lackluster attempt to make money for Primary. And that's exactly what I got. Seriously, just take one look at the flyer, and tell me what you see. Nothing on the front except an ugly-ass drawing that frankly is aesthetically disgusting. What's on the back? DJ Lineup, and infolines. Anything about vibe, togetherness, raving in general? No. That flyer said to me, basically : "We're Primary, and if we throw a party, 4000 people will come no matter how much effort we put into trying to make it special." And, that's exactly what we got. Bullshit at the door, waiting 2-3 hours to pay them $20-$25. Wak. Then, we get inside, and there are two rooms. Now, yes, the bulding is beautiful, sure. But, soda for $2.25? Lemonade for $3.50? That is fucking awful. Well, anyway, going into the main room, the sound was very good, and the lighting was pretty impressive. The screens up front were really unimpressive.. I mean, jesus, people, how hard is it to make a decent videotape of crazy shit? Christ, why do people even bother? I went upstairs, ONCE. Upstairs was totally worthless for me. Yeah, it was pretty, but the lights were on. That's all I have to say. Not even freaking high school dances have the lights on, and there's a reason, folks. So, I came back downstairs, and Cosmic Baby was on. What the fuck was up w/ this joker? Cosmic Baby reminded me of Juan Atkins at Heaven : totally hyped, and playing shit. Just like Juan was beatmixing *awfully* (was he on rock, or something), Cosmic baby was playing one song, stopping the music and playing another. Now, I suppose that's not that bad, but his songs *didn't go anywhere*. The same riff for three minutes, then another song. Plus, he was dancing around like a fucking idiot, headbanging and pumping his fist like David Lee Roth. I left that room, and went to talk to my girlfriend. I was bummed out by how wak things were going, but she cheered me up. Anyway, as I got off the phone with her, I heard the music stop, and the MC yell "DJ RAP!!@!". Now, Rap is basically the reason I came to this party, because the rest of the lineup was really not very impressive. "DJ RAP WITH THE WICKED SELECTION!" - MC ? That just about sums it up. Rap kicked my ass all over the place. My legs were tired from standing for 2 hours in the cold line, but they got into gear real quick. I danced for the entire hour of her set, and the MC was *really* good. He must have said "DJ Rap" about six hundered times, but his MCing was a *great* addition to Rap's set. Rap spun the *BEST* jungle I have ever heard. I couldn't stop dancing for five minutes, it was so fucking good. Her mixing skills were fresh as hell, and it was truly the "wicked selection". I actually got to see her walking to the ladies room after her set, when I was sitting down resting. I ran up to her and asked her if I could hug her. She apparently had to get to the bathroom, because she kept walking and just shook my hand. Whatever, that was cool enough. I left after Rap, and was sitting outside the main dance floor for a while. I talked to Andrew for quite a bit, and I ended up taking a 2 hour nap. It was really nice. I haven't been sleeping much, and it felt good. Anyway, I woke up, and went into the main room again. Robbie Hardkiss bored the fuck out of me, until the last record. The last record was good, but ending the party at 7am just like that was pretty crappy. The people : UGh. I was really disgusted by a good amount of the people there. Now, I try not to be judgemental, but when you see people just doing the stupidist shit cause they're so fucked up.. Plus, there was disrespect all over the place, and a general lack of any community feeling or.. vibe. It seemed like people came to the party just to come to a party, like a frat party, but with better trappings. Getting a hug out of someone was difficult, talking to someone.. very difficult. I tried handing out candy, but just about no-one wanted any. Whatever. I had a better time at Plural. Let's do the math, kids. $23 average ticket price (est) x 3800 ravers $75,000, or so? $80,000? How much could this pary have cost? $40,000? $50,000? $60,000? Somehow I doubt that it was much over $50,000, and that is pretty fucking ridiculous. Heaven was a *much* better party, on the same scale. Why do I think so? Because alan payed attention to the little things, and the bigger things, too. A mention of a reason for raving on the flyer, even. A lineup that was 3x the lineup for BB. Out of 16 acts, *SIX* were from outside of the NE/NY area. Was that what the $25 was for? A party that, if you were lucky, you got 7/8 hours out of? An upstairs that was wak and shut down for a good part of the night? A bunch of wak ass people? A two hour wait in line? I have nothing against making large amounts of money, but how about some attention to detail and the scene? I really don't have any respect for Primary for this party. The only reasons I had a good time were Andrew and DJ RAP. Oh well.. I somehow doubt I'm going to be at Purple. NET GREETS REspect to Dag and Jimmy HAt for a party that was worth the money, and Dylan Drazen for a set that was better than Cosmic Baby's. Hey to andrew, chris, james baxter and pat nichols, alan, jimmy, drew, jenberrry, lettuce, dylan, that tall dancing guy at BS, uh.. that girl w/ the 7 one her shirt (who are you?), everyone else who I met. Being my first "big" rave, I was inveriably excited to be there. However, the music itself was worth the wait in the line...Only waited about an hour to get in even having to get another ticket, it still was cold and Primary should have expected the crowd and planned accordingly. Once in though, the music and seeing the peeps that I know made the scene that much better. Definate big ups to the entire Boston Kru and those who I met both at The Big Sekkrit (werd to Jimmy and Dag for that) and at the party itself: Darwin, Hobbes, Cristo, Allen, anyone I missed (I met alot of people). Wink's set was simply out of hand and am VERY excited to hear him again at Empire Strikes Back. DJ Rap's set was beyond words...brocking out to her set has left me sore. Interesting seeing Lady Miss Kira annonce her set...Ithought the scene could have been a little better...getting asked if I had/wanted E/acid/etc 3-6 times on the way up or down the stairs got a little irritating, but no harm done. Shout outs to those with smiles and candy and the girls with the silver stars :) Peace all...see you at Empire. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Save me from the awful sound of nothing... -Smashing Pumpkins ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~-->bhaner@cs.bu.edu<--~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Date: Mon, 6 Mar 1995 13:15:29 EST From: ??? Yeah, it's great stuff, tho maybe not straight up jumpin and pumpin stuff. The crowd seemed a little flat at points, and maybe watching too intently. But his stuff is beautiful, maybe almost New-Ageish. #WINK was really really good...nice and intense. Just a some things I want to say about the above two events. I guess I'll start off with The Big Sekkrit. I was kinda disappointed in the turnout, but I think we were able to get at least three of our objectives accomplished which was for net-ravers to get to meet, hang out, and get to know each other better. I totally overestimated the number of people that would show up and had chris get a space and sound system that was way to large. This probably created an atmosphere that wasn't too good for the meeting, hanging out, and getting to know each other better, and I regret this very much. Maybe it was just me, but it didn't seem like people were having too much fun which was also disappointing. And not too many people danced (also disappointing but understandable). The one person that totally made my night was this guy (w/ a crew cut) who just meandered in and danced HARD almost non-stop for 2+ hours to my set and Dylan's set. Dylan told me later that he was dancing as hard at Baby Blue. This is a guy who was born to rave. Another high point of the night was seeing new faces and faces I haven't seen for a long time like Hannibal, Darwin, Bob Baxter, Lettuce & significant other (sorry forgot your name :), Terminata Ed (sp?), Don, Jeannie's brother, and the whole midwest crew (jay, kris, and eric), and anyone I missed (sorry). The midwest crew iz staying with me and Insoo now, and they plan to goto Flow on Tuesday, so I hope the Boston crew will be there to greet them (hint, hint miked ;). On to Baby Blue. Tin Tin and Wink rocked, but none of the others did much for me. All in all, I'd say Baby Blue was pretty good, but I don't have much other large-scale events that I've been to to compare it with so I can't really do a objective analysis. The mw-ravers definitely seemed to enjoy the whole show. They told me afterwards that there usually isn't a rave in the midwest that is as organized as Baby Blue which kinda surprised me. I think the breakfast at Denny's woulda tasted better if I wasn't so drained. JimmY |-|/\t Date: Tue, 7 Mar 1995 18:36:45 -0500 From: Christopher Newton Subject: Baby Blue (oh not again!) X-To: NE-RAVES mailing list Well, much has been said in regards to this party, so I'll make things short...(gotta get to Neith's for dinner :) ) Hmmm... my outlook on this party beforehand was incredible... I went to the Primary pre-pre party at Axis the night before and got hyped for it... the people seemed really cool and it seemed like they had their stuff together... Then, the next night, I arrived.. I waited an hour in the cold only to hear (when I was at the top of the stairs) that girls had to go in one door for pat-downs, and guys in the other... *IT'S CALLED A SIMPLE SIGN or MEGAPHONE!! Look into it!* I arrived in the mid-point of Tin-Tin's set, which was slammin, but my thoughts were more on the vibe... the lack of the vibe. I must have been in the front hallway for two minutes when I got propositioned for Special K and E twice... give me a break. There were people sitting all over the floor both upstairs, downstairs, and ON the stairs, throwing their flyers and trash on the floor ! (RESPECT YOUR SITES!!) The site itself was large as hell, but just didn't do it for me. I guess the main room was decent, if you don't mind stepping over E people dry-humping themselves on the floor and bashing into people sitting on the floor while trying to get into a groove (oh well...) The muzik was great up until DJ Rap finished (which I have also commented on her techniques in another post)... this was the point where I STUPIDLY went upstairs (missing Wink's set (give me a big *slap!* for that...what a moron I am!) and sat on the marble step with Neith trying to catch some Z's (sorry you were so cold! ;) ) The whole scene upstairs disgusted me... the musik was pretty horrid, combined with the fact that the lights were on the whole time and the crowd was pretty much vibe-less (unless you count being totally zoinked off of your as* a "vibe") It was also at this time when I got seperated from the whole Boston Kru, and that seemed to have lessened my happiness and energy level (where were you guys?!?) Oh well.. the Big Sekkrit was nice (THANX Jimmy and Dag!) It was a great place to meet up with people and get to know them, regardless of how many people showed up. It's the more intimate parties like those that I really appreciate, and it is because of that that I am REALLY hyped for Sprockett's PLURALIZED... The best part of the night were the people I met off of the net... greetings go out to JIMMY, DYLAN, BOB BAXTER, ERIC (HOBBES), JAY, JILL, HANK, IAN, NEITH, MIKE D, ZOINKS, KIRSTEN, KRISTEN, BEN (ECO), BEN (NOSFERATU), RALPH, CHRISTO and all of the others I forgot! (Denny's was RAD... see you at Neith's!) Also, peace goes out to Stickman and the Ithaca possee... my hardcore brutha from Pittsburgh (glad you enjoyed the party)... To sum up.. the party was DECENT, but not worth the 22 dollars I paid because of the weak vibe, so-so musik and lack of respect for the venue (STOP THE SENSELESS TAGGING!) Being connected to a small group kept the vibe going for me which waxed and waned throughout the night... after geting to know some of the primary crew over the past months I have to say that I feel they strive for quality... but maybe something this big cannot succeed right now with how the scene has developed in the northeast, there just seemed to be so many people there who were not primarily there to be moved by the music, only at a few points and most solidly thru Wink's set did people explode and something move throughout the room and create a common flow. I danced for much of the night and was very happy about that and had some joyful encounters on and off with people but many non-net friends who were there seemed to be on low energy and that affected me... overall I can see I have no greater clarity on all of this - I guess I just felt on and off all the ups and downs in the different parts of people's reviews oddly enough... and odder still I felt a positive afterglow even though the party had its ups and downs... I'm left feeling somewhat adrift about any judgement really but I know the Muzik has healing power.... it was fun to see the group pictures on dag's page today and I pointed it out to a few people at work who enjoyed it, new wonders of communication for some :) special thanks to neith for making me stay awake while I drove back to Boston peace and wonder, ralph Date: Thu, 9 Mar 1995 11:54:19 -0400 From: BEN Subject: Pictures/Shouts/Baby Blue X-To: NE-RAVES@UMDD.UMD.EDU lo, This weekend lived up to my expectations. X-To: ne-raves@umdd.umd.edu Okay, I know this is late, but it's my first chance at posting about bb, etc.. Big sekkrit was much fun, I never got a chance to spin on such a large system.. quite a head rush. Thanks to all that came and showed support, it was a fun, intimate time.. (ooh.) Jimmy&Dag, youz da best.. check out pictures of me and the others on dag's homepage.. Baby blue, I'm sure you've all heard way too much about, but I'm gonna talk some about it. The door was a pain, but I just kinda snuk around and got in before all my friends did (hi, drew). It wasn't nearly as bad as the door at heaven.. now THAT was a nightmare. When I got in, Tin Tin was throwin down some nice solid trance. Did ANYONE hear Tiga spin? I heard he went on real early, and with that long door wait, who could have heard him? I was kinda disappointed when finding out I wouldn't hear him..he was pretty good at heaven. Alright, then cosmic baby came on, bla bla.. He seemed to be moving around more than anything else.. I was watching him, trying to figure out what he was doing and what was already there.. I thought he was doing some little piano riff thing live, saw him hitting the keys, but then he went to wipe his forehead off and that same piano line continued.. heh. At one point, he screwed up and another song started in the middle of another one. Looked like he hit "stop" on something..could it have been a dat? I honestly didn't see him doing anything live, but I'm no expert in that area.. Okay. Time for rap. I do like jungle, but I wasn't really in the mood for that sound at the moment, so me and jimmy went upstairs to chill in the silent, bright room. I later found out that rap needed the upstairs' mixer. Osheen was quite pissed, as I would be. A while passed, and I heard wink had taken control. We went downstairs, and he was doin his good ol acid house thing.. It was awesome just watching everyone else go off to his music.. At some points I looked back at the people (I was near the front) and it seemed as if everyone was facing in his direction, throwing their hands in the air and screaming and chanting for him.. it was awesome, like he was a god or somethin.. Then doc martin came on. I don't think anyone on this list spoke of his set which was from 5-6 I think. I couldn't bare his music. It turned my stomach. So, I went to sit outside one of the bathrooms right outside the main room, and we (me, jimmy, hannibal) just watched people for like 1.5 hrs.. SOmething seemed wrong, but I'm not quite sure what it was.. people were acting real strange.. LIke they were there to be there, to get fucked up and "party, man".. I know many people felt a large vibe from the party, but I didn't. It may also be attributed to my mood at the time, though. I was quite tired and just wasn't in that ravey mood.. but it was a great party, and primary definitely deserves props.. The sound was phenominal, and the lighting was pretty, and it was fun watching the intellibeam (that's what it was, right?). I was too tired to dance to robberta hardkiss' set, but it was nice and "chill".. We left when it ended, and it was off to denny's. A strange and tiresome morning.. Nice hanging w/ and meeting: Jimmy, Hannibal, Alan Sanctuary, Pistol Pete, Skinner, Bob Baxter, Stephan, MikeD, Dag, Zoinks, Drew, Lettuce, Ian, Donato, Kirsten, Darwin (better than cosmic baby?), Scott Richmond, and so many others I'm sure I've forgotten.. I'm glad baby blue worked out well.. Oh, and the highlight of it all was, I was hangin in temple records in new york last tuesday, and I got to meet rap..
